What is Dalgona Coffee?

Let’s learn some interesting facts about this trendy coffee which everyone’s talking about.

Dalgona coffee is basically a very creamy form of coffee. You whip all the ingredients until it becomes soft and fluffy and then add it to a glass of cold milk.

To put it into simpler terms, it’s our regular cappuccino standing on its head. Instead of adding hot milk to a cup of hand-beaten coffee mixture, you just put the coffee at the top of your beverage.

A New Member of the Coffee Family?

Dalgona is not even new though. The drink first originated in South Asia where people have been consuming it for decades. We just call it beaten coffee or whipped coffee.

But its surge in popularity began with an episode of a South Korean variety show Pyunstorang, where celebrities compete to develop new recipes and eventually introducing them to the general public.

In its January episode, actor Jung Il Woo tried the beverage for the first time in Macau and gave it the nickname ‘dalgona’ for its resemblance to the traditional Korean sugar candy of the same name.

Since then, the ‘dalgona coffee’ trend emerged in the South Korean food industry and from there on caught the eye of social media influencers all over the world with certain variations.

These days, making Dalgona coffee has become a trend on social media sites like Instagram and TikTok too.

But First, Coffee!

That’s enough history lesson for one day. Now let’s get back to cooking.

The good news. It’s super easy to make. All coffee lovers who miss buying expensive coffee during quarantine, this is especially for you. It’s simple, easy on the pocket and Instagram worthy. Dalgona coffee for the win.

You need these simple ingredients:

  • Instant coffee
  • Sugar
  • Hot Water
  • Milk

Instructions for making Dalgona coffee

  • Take coffee, sugar and hot water in equal proportions.
  • You can take as little as 1 tsp at a time and as much as a quarter cup of each at a time.
  • Keep in mind that the quantity of these ingredients will affect the creamy texture; the less they are, the lesser the foam.
  • I took 2 tbsp of each.

  • Put them all in a large mixing bowl and start whisking with a whisk, tea spoon or a hand mixer.
  • Hand mixer will get the job done in 5-8 minutes, however the other two utensils will take some more time and energy.
  • Now grab your tools and whisk like there’s no tomorrow. If you haven’t done your workout in days, I would recommend you use a whisk to tone up your arms. Thank me later!

Whisk it for a good 10-12 minutes until you reach a creamy consistency. Keep an eye on the change in color.

This is the kind of consistency you need. Once released it shouldn’t just drip into the mixture and disappear, instead you should be able to make a pattern with it.
