Mawra Hocane

While Pakistani celebrities like Rabiya Butt clap back at online trolls, and Saheefa Jabbar disables comments on her Instagram posts, not all celebs tend to brush away the harsh comments. Mawra Hocane revealed she almost quit the biz over online hate.

The digital sphere isn’t much different from the real-world. Netizens fall all across the spectrum, so yes there are trolls online. When it comes to celebs, haters are not motivators for everyone. In her appearance on Mira Sethi’s web show ‘Hello Mira Sethi’ the Sammi actress talked about how the impact of social media on the celebrity world.

“Like I said, when I had started working, Instagram was just another app. But as time went on, people started asking me to use this ‘platform’ to educate other actors and people. And I would tell them, social media, without us, is nothing.”

With social media allowing direct interactions between the public and celebs, the communication has greatly shifted from the days of classic Lollywood and state TV.

“I didn’t want to leave any wrong impression in the minds of people younger than me. And even if I stop working today, my social media account has no meaning.”

The direct criticism and backlash were hard for Mawra Hocane to deal with. The Yahan Pyar Nahi Hai actress even recalled getting death threats. There was a time when the starlet even moved abroad and contemplated leaving the industry.

“You can’t even think about making a mistake, because you have been placed on a pedestal where you can’t say anything wrong. So the first time this hit me I was like, I want to stop using it. I want to stop acting and I just want to leave. And I actually went to Sydney and told my parents ‘I don’t want to do this anymore,’”

Despite the emergence of ‘social media stars’ both Mawra Hocane and Mira Sethi assert that the popularity of the celeb is nothing without their work.

“I just feel the more you work, the more you can use your social media to project that work. And if you want to raise an important issue than you can raise it there, but if you have no voice, and no purpose, social media is useless,”
