‘Mayi Ri’: Netizens Upset Over Annie’s Pregnancy Reveal

The show has come under criticism for glorifying child marriages.

The latest episode of the immensely popular drama serial Mayi Ri, starring Aina Asif, has ignited a heated debate among viewers after the unexpected revelation of Annie’s pregnancy.

The show, which initially aimed to shed light on the sensitive issue of child marriage, is now facing criticism for its portrayal of the subject matter.

Mayi Ri’s latest episode have triggered concerns about the show’s handling of this narrative, with some viewers expressing apprehensions that it may inadvertently convey a different message.

The ARY Digital show was introduced as a thought-provoking series that delved into the darker aspects of society, particularly the deeply ingrained problem of child marriage.

The narrative follows Annie, a vivacious 15-year-old schoolgirl whose life takes a harrowing turn when she is forced into marriage with her underage cousin due to her uncle’s will. Through Annie’s journey, the show intended to expose the devastating consequences of child marriages, which can forever shatter innocent childhoods.

One Twitter user criticized the series, saying,

Mayi Ri has a massive viewership, and there’s a pregnant 15-year-old girl who is portrayed as happily married. How can anyone glorify child marriage? Nobody cares if you show their marriage was a wrong decision in the last episode or whatever. This is just so wrong!

Another Twitter user countered this perspective, stating, “Happily married? They’ve only just started to be kind to each other, and surely this storyline is introduced to raise awareness about the drawbacks of child marriage. I believe you’ve missed the entire point of the series.”

Nevertheless, the initial critic argued, “After so many episodes of a guy standing up for the girl every time, making things right for her, they eventually get her pregnant? People are making edits of them, wanting a guy like him? It’s been 40 episodes, and they have yet to raise awareness about how all of this is actually wrong.”

One Twitter user pointed out, “The pregnancy was teased in advance. Annie and Fakhir are products of child marriages. It’s a vicious cycle, a blow to Annie’s future – and that’s the point. The issue lies in the treatment. Intimacy at a young age is a significant concern. It needed to be handled sensitively. That’s the problem.”

The same user added a response to another post, stating, “People who are protesting over the pregnancy being a storyline are protesting the wrong thing. What they are showing is what they always meant to show. But the way it is being handled is not good.”

Yet another viewer commented, “One of the reasons I can’t bring myself to watch this is because I can’t figure out how they want me to process this story! I know audiences sometimes romanticize problematic stuff, but for something this sensitive, there should be zero ambiguity that can be misinterpreted, surely?”

One user expressed a more optimistic view, saying, “I think now the real struggle of child marriage will start because pregnancy is the biggest issue of child marriage as it can harm the baby, the teen mother, and many girls have to leave their studies for that… As long as they don’t glorify this, this track is on point.”

However, some viewers raised concerns about casting choices, with one netizen noting, “The casting should have been more responsible. Why cast underage kids? At least cast an actress who is an adult but can pass off as underage. This looks uncomfortable considering she is just 15 in real life.”

Another user added, “There are many things that are wrong but still happening in many societies and cultures. This show is just an effort to showcase the life of a couple forced into a relationship at a very young age. And about the pregnancy part, as disturbing as it is, it happens.”
