Meet Pakistan’s First Female Hip-Hop Artist from Lyari

She made quite a debut with the Aurat March.

After Lyari Underground and Sami Amiri, Lyari is churning out more great rappers.

Hip Hop is a global phenomenon and Pakistan is not falling behind either. While you would expect Urdu to dominate this trend in the music industry, that is contrary to the truth.

Rap music became more mainstream with Punjabi rapper Bohemia. Then the rappers of Lyari took the Karachi rap scene by storm.

Currently, the most influential rappers in Karachi are Lyari Underground.

Rap and Hip Hop have remained a predominantly male vocation.

Now Patari has produced perhaps Lyari’s first female rapper who is no longer restricted to the underground. Patari put out a track titled Gully Girls by a teenage rapper EvaB.

You can listen to it here:

About EvaB and Her Debut Track

EvaB is a rapper from Lyari who works under a pseudonym. Why a pen name though? She revealed that her family won’t allow her to rap and therefore, using a pseudonym made perfect sense to push her work out there.

Apparently, EvaB recorded her debut track on her phone hiding in her cupboard.

Gully Girls is a female rendition of  Gully Boy’s ‘Apna Time Aayega’.  EvaB collaborated with Zari Faisal for this track.

The track’s opening lyrics are “Jab Zindagi apni hai, Tou marzi doosron ki kyun hai”.

This line is so spot on, describing the situation of every woman. The track really comes from the heart.

Right in Time for Aurat March

The track is a feminist anthem for women. Even in the 21st-century, there are times when women need permission to do things as major as making a career choice.

Since Gully Girls is the perfect feminist anthem, it was played at the end of the Aurat March on the 8th of March, International Women’s Day in Karachi. Unfortunately, EvaB could not perform live.
