Mossack Fonseca Sues Netflix Over Panama Papers Film

They say the film defames them. Do you agree?

Netflix set to premiere their film about the Panama Papers scandal are facing a lawsuit from Mossack Fonseca for defamation. The film titled The Laundromat is based on the said law firm that was involved in money laundering and corruption.

The 2016 Panama Fiasco

Mossack Fonseca was a Panama law firm that was in the middle of the 2016 controversy in which several of international millionaires were exposed of using offshore accounts and evading taxes.

The list of clients leaked from the Mossack Fonseca documents include rich and high level personalities such as Russian President Vladmir Putin, Argentinian football superstar Lionel Messi and of course, our very own Sharif family (Maryam Nawaz and her father Nawaz Sharif)!

About The Film

Mossack Fonseca is pressing charges against Netflix Inc. for releasing a film that is based on the two lawyers who founded the law firm (Jürgen Mossack, Ramón Fonseca Mora). The film features Gary Oldman and Antonio Banderas, who portray the lawyers that were at the center of the 2016 scandal that shocked the world. The film also includes multi-award winning actress Meryl Streep as a widow investigating insurance fraud.

The Irony!

According to source, the law firm still maintains that the massive leak of documents was “information theft” and is ironically illegal. The law firm shut down last year for helping clients evade taxes, conceal assets using shell companies and sham foundation, which is also illegal!

A Small Cameo Or After-Credits Scene?

The film has the making of a critical success. Let’s hope there’s a small cameo for the man of the hour: Nawaz Shariff and his daughter Maryam Nawaz. Maybe Netflix can book Jason Alexander (Seinfeld) and Priyanka Chopra to play the roles! That would be perfect!
