“13 Reasons Why” Removes Scene

Basically, the highly controversial scene, which shows Hannah Baker taking her own life, has been edited.

The statement also said that the decision was taken following the advice of medical experts which includes Dr. Christine Moutier, chief medical officer at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

“We’ve heard from many young people that 13 Reasons Why encouraged them to start conversations about difficult issues like depression and suicide and get help — often for the first time.“

The statement goes on to say:

“As we prepare to launch Season 3 later this summer, we’ve been mindful about the ongoing debate around the show.

So on the advice of medical experts, including Dr. Christine Moutier, chief medical officer at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, we’ve decided with creator Brian Yorkey and the producers to edit the scene in which Hannah takes her own life from Season 1.“

The streaming giant also shared a statement from the creator of the show —13 Reasons Why— Brian Yorkey.

The Controversial Scene

This scene shows the main character of the series —Hannah Baker — bleeding to death in a bathtub after she cuts her wrist open.

Now, in the edited scene, Hannah can be seen staring at herself in the mirror. After a few moments, her parent walk in the bathroom, only to find her dead. The scene implies that she took her own life, rather than showing that experience in a grisly fashion.

The Netflix original series first premiered in March 2017. Ever since then, the show has received mixed reactions. Some people have appreciated the creators of the show for raising awareness about sensitive topics such as rape, self-harm, and bullying. Others have been critical of how Hannah Baker’s suicide has been shown in excruciating detail.

The third season of 13 Reasons Why will premier later this year.
