Netflix is teaming up with revered Indian filmmaker, Sanjay Leela Bhansali for web series about Pakistan’s Heeramandi.
The historical drama series, Heeramandi is set in Lahore’s red-light district before the Indo-Pak partition. It’s been previously reported that this project will follow several stories of workers from that time and place.

In a statement, Netflix India described the show as;
“The show will explore stories of courtesans and the hidden cultural reality of Heeramandi, their dazzling district in pre-independent India. It’s a series about love, betrayal, succession and politics in the kothas through three generations of tawaifs which promises Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s trademark larger than life sets, multi-faceted characters and soulful compositions.”

Previous Reports About Heeramandi
Shooting for Heera Mandi was reportedly scheduled for the first quarter of 2021. Haawaizada director Vibhu Puri was said to be directing the film.
Other rumored developments regarding the series included word that big-wigs had been roped in for the Heeramandi cast. The rumored cast included names like Deepika Padukone, Madhuri Dixit, Ashwariya Rai Bachman, Parineeti Chopra, Manisha Koirala, and Vidya Balan.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali is known to nail period pieces with his grandiose cinematography and opulent costumes. Historical pieces have become somewhat of a trademark for the filmmaker behind works like Padmaavat (2018), Bajirao Mastani (2015), Saawariya (2007), and Devdas (2002).

The ace director is also working on another period piece centered around a prostitute, Gangubai Kathiavadi. Alia Bhatt has been roped in for the titular role in that endeavor.
It was previously speculated that the Gangubai Kathiavadi biopic and Heeramandi might be the same project. That was later cleared out.
