Nimrita Kumari Case Continues to Dominate Headlines Over ‘Conflicting’ Statements

Justice delayed is justice denied.

Nimrita Kumari

After the final post-mortem report confirmed that Nimrita Kumari was indeed murdered and violated prior to being strangled to death, some people are still calling it a suicide. In fact, certain quarters are trivializing the medico-legal officer’s final post mortem report.

After the release of the autopsy report prepared by medico-legal officer (MLO) Dr. Amrita on November 6th, she was called in by Larkana district and session judge. The judge holding a judicial inquiry into case asked Dr. Amrita various questions in view of her provisional and final post-mortem reports.

The MLO was called in to explain the September 17th provisional and November 6th final post-mortem reports in the backdrop of the use of words ‘strangulation’, ‘hanging’, ‘ligature material’ and ‘sexual act’ (on the basis of DNA profiling report).

The November 6th final post-mortem report made it clear the young victim was raped and strangulated. Dr. Amrita mentioned “indication of sexual act” in the wake of DNA profiling report of Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences’ Forensic and Molecular Biology Laboratory for DNA Testing.

Larkana district and session judge is likely to complete the judicial probe in Nimrita Kumari’s case by next week.

Based on previous reports ‘a vaginal swab tested positive during the autopsy, indicating a forced sexual act’. Yet Dawn‘s anonymous source said:

“She [MLO] was required to determine cause of death whether it was suicide or murder. But she traveled into another debate, though unnecessarily, as she didn’t comment whether “sexual act” was by consent or it was forceful”

Meanwhile, another anonymous source, a DNA laboratory source of LUMHS said:

“MLO only sent them ‘swab and clothes and nothing else. The MLO should have sent ‘nails’ of deceased which played a key role in medico-legal examination”

Nimrita Kumari Post Mortem Report

Nimrita Kumari was a final-year BDS student of the Bibi Aseefa Dental College in Larkana. She was found dead in her hostel room on September 16th.

Police declared it a case of suicide. However her brother, a forensic consultant for the police Dr. Vishal, insists that she was murdered.

Netizens and people across Pakistan were outraged by authorities immediately assuming it’s a suicide prior to a medical report and #JusticeForNimrita flooded social media.

Now people await a fair verdict for a woman who belonged to a minority group. Immediately after the post-mortem report, Netizens demanded the culprit be caught now that they have DNA evidence.

Recently, activist Punhal Sario led a token hunger strike observed by civil society activists outside the local press club to raise a voice for justice in the case. He said;

“Larkana police need to find out the third person who, according to DNA profiling report, met her before her death as DNA of two suspects in custody did not match with male DNA”,

Punhal Sario asks why the culprit is not being pursued and detained despite DNA evidence. He theorized as to why the police are reluctant, suspecting the involvement of a powerful person.

“The Larkana DIG and SSP are supposed to be competent officers; why are they reluctant to lay hands on culprit is anybody’s guess, … Is this third person so powerful to be [unable to be] brought to justice?”

He brought up why pro-chancellor of Sindh universities Nisar Khuhro jumped to the “suicide’ narrative” when even an investigation into the case had not been started.

According to another report shared by an anonymous official, the report of the inquiry committee formed by the Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University (SMBBMU) administration “suggested that it was suicide”.

This report has been submitted to the Larkana sessions judge.
