Pakistani Film Industry Suffers Major Loss in 2019

Here are all the numbers.

Pakistani Films.

Pakistani cinema may have made progress with its production qualities and overall output this year, but there’s still ways to go before it can become the financial powerhouse it has the potential to be. Even during its current revival stage, Pakistani films faced obstacles in attracting audiences this year in 2019. Reports say that they faced a cumulative revenue loss of 45% when compared to last year.

2018 was a fruitful year for Pakistani cinema, generating ticket sales of up to Rs.2,500 million. Contrast these figures with 2019, and we can see how much it under-performed. This year saw revenues reaching up to Rs.1,800 million, a loss of 45% from last year.

Films such as Superstar, Paray Hut love, Wrong Number 2, Chalawa, Sher Dil, Baji, Heer Maan Ja, Lal Kabootar, Katak Shah and Project Ghazi have been currently showcased so far in cinemas in 2019.

Box Office Numbers

We take a look at revenues generated by Pakistani films this year:

  • Superstar: Rs.270 Million
  • Paray Hat Love: Rs.260.8 Million
  • Wrong Number 2: Rs.216.50 Million
  • Chawala: Rs.179 Million
  • Sher Dil: Rs.126.10 Million
  • Baji: Rs.110 Million
  • Heer Maan Ja: Rs.100 Million
  • Lal Kabootar: Rs.30.4 Million
  • Khatak Shah: Rs. 20 Million
  • Project Ghazi: Rs. 20 Million

Other films such as Gumm, Janoon-e-Ishq, Ready-Steady No, Tum Hi To Ho, Tewar, Operation Swift Retort, Daal Chawal, Darj, Kaaf Kanga and Talash, failed to make any significant impact on the Pakistani cinema scene.

However, it should be mentioned that Operation Swift Retort was a not-for-profit movie and not released commercially on cinemas.

The last film to be released this year is “Sach”, which is scheduled for December 20, 2019. Though it is anyone’s guess how much will it rake in. Hopefully, the jam-packed lineup of Lollywood productions for 2020 will bring in more money than 2019.
