Pakistan’s First Hijabi Javelin Thrower is Proud of Who She is

Her religious and cultural beliefs coexist with her talent.

Pakistan’s first hijabi javelin thrower Tehrim Fatima has made her mark in the field of the Olympic-grade sport.  The official name of the sport she competes in is tent pegging, though most of us are familiar with the term javelin throwing. In fact, she’s also the first javelin thrower to compete at a national level.

In an interview with ARY News, Tehrim Fatima reveals that although tent pegging is no walk in the park, she’s better at the sport than men. She has been in the athletic sport for three years and counting.

People have concerns about her attire coming in the way of her skills. But Fatima says that her hijab has never gotten in the way of her success as an expert thrower.

“I have been throwing the javelin for the last two or three years and I am the first female athlete to compete at the national level last year.”

Pakistan’s first hijabi javelin thrower, Tehrim Fatima

Pakistan doesn’t have a national team for the sport, otherwise, who knows what heights Pakistan’s first hijabi javelin thrower might have achieved. She may have even moved on to compete at an international level. We hope that someone from the Sports Ministry is listening.

Being the first hijabi javelin thrower is not enough, now she wants to be Pakistan’s first female trainer too. As a trainer, Tehrim feels she will be able to elevate Pakistan’s aptitude in the sport.

She wants to form a women’s team that will go abroad and represent Pakistan.

Aside from athletics, Tahrim Fatima is also opening new avenues for women in equestrian sports.
