Perfect Snack Ideas To Chase Away The Monsoon Blues

It’s August, with that comes monsoon season. That means a lot of time indoors amid rainy days. That can get gloomy real fast, with sunshine and socializing. So naturally, we need comfort food. Something low effort, of course, so we need the perfect snack ideas.

It’s not uncommon to throw together ‘rainy day’ snacks whenever it rains. Even more so during the monsoon season. While we might all have our preferences regarding savory or sweet, the best option is always both. So we put together a list of things that hit that sweet spot in between.

Pakoras

perfect snack

These fritters are a must when it comes to rainy day snacks. Of course, whether you’re thinking vegetable based with spinach and other greens, potato-based or more, this is a savory snack. However, pair it with sweet chutney and you have perfect bliss.

Samosas

Another potato based deep fried snack that is the epitome of desi comfort food. However, you can spice it up with more vegetable options or even mince meat. Then there are the meetha samosas varieties.

We will always recommend a savory snack with sweet chutney. Think ‘spicy mango chutney’!

Sev Puri

perfect snack

This is one of the most popular chaat dishes that ever existed and for good reason. It’s easy. All you need is papri, sev, boiled potatoes, onions, yogurt, and an assortment of chutneys ranting from fresh mint, to sour tamarind, and sweet apricot.

There’s not even a fixed ratio. You can ad whatever you’d like in proportions of your choice.

Khatay Aloo

Another perfect snackwith no ‘right way’ of going about it. There’s a whole range of technical recipes out there, but let’s go with the simplest. Finely chop onions, cumin seeds, dried red chilies, ginger paste, turmeric powder, and coriander powder all in hot oil sautéed with potatoes. Then sprinkled with black salt, and tamarind paste as per taste. There you have it folks.

Roasted Bhutta

Now grilled bhutta (corn)  is a must have monsoon snack. Better to buy it from a hawker but in the rain that’s not an option so try half boiling the corn and grilling the rest on either a gas stove or in the oven. Top that with lemon and a spice rub and there’s the perfect snack.

For more sweetness you can use limes or even butter.

Dahi Vada

dahi vada

Another not so difficult snack that hits the sweet spot between savory and sweet. While the vada itself doesn’t have spices, you can mix it up and add some to the center of your homemade ones. Don’t worry the creamy sweetness of the yogurt will tone it down.

Honorable Mention – Jalebi

perfect snack

This isn’t that savory sweet snack that fits in with the rest of the list but its a rainy day snack. While jalebi isn’t the go to sweetmeat we go for on a normal day, a bit of rain changes that.
