The Punjab government has decided to pull the curtain on several stage actresses, banning them for their “exuberant” dance performances.
The Punjab Arts Council has issued a list of the banned performers, and it reads like a who’s who of the stage scene: Sonia Chaudhary, Silk Jutt, Arooj Khan, Tina Chaudhary, and Adeeba Rana, to name a few. These actresses, known for their “energetic” performances, will be sidelined during one of the busiest times of the year for theatre.
The authorities have also sent legal notices to these actresses, accusing them of engaging in “immoral actions” on stage. They’ve demanded explanations, but so far, the actresses have been as quiet as a mime in a library.
This crackdown is part of a grand plan to ensure that stage performances align with cultural and moral standards. Because, you know, nothing says “family entertainment” like a government-mandated morality check. Officials have warned that if the actresses don’t respond to the notices, they might face further action.
Stage theatres in Punjab are usually packed during festive seasons like Eid, where families, mostly your creepy uncles and their friends, or the “buoys,” gather to enjoy these performances. However, authorities have been increasingly vigilant, monitoring shows to curb content deemed inappropriate.
This is not something new as the government has been cracking down on stage shows that promote vulgarity and not-so-kid-friendly content for the public.
