Sadaf Kanwal explained what kind of ‘modern wife’ she is in the couple’s recent appearance on television together. Shahroze Sabzwari and Sadaf Kanwal seem to have evened out past statements, after Shahroze said, ‘I pick up Sadaf’s shoes too‘.

Apparently, Sadaf Kanwal is under the impression that she’s being dubbed a ‘modern wife’ for her earlier statement about the husband being superior and how as a wife it’s her job to pick up his shoes, etc.

This sparked quite a debate online as Netizens asserted equality between partners and those that encouraged old gender norms for women.

Now in their appearance on Timeout With Ahsan Khan, the model said she’s not a ‘modern wife for doing all these things.’

“Me being modern has nothing to do with it. I love my husband, I will take care of him, always.”

That’s when Shahroze chipped in that he too will pick up his wife’s clothing and shoes;

“This is my wife, my partner. If she asks ‘Shahroze can you bring me shoes?’ I’ll bring her not one but four pairs.”

Sadaf then mentioned;

“The shoes I’m wearing he brought them from the wardrobe, … I asked which one I should wear and he brought the pair he wanted me to wear.”

This is the equality that liberals call for. On the other hand, traditional gender roles for South Asian women involve looking after their husband and children much the same. Rather than the spouses being partners and a participatory approach to homemaking and decision making in a marriage.

Studies show this unequal distribution of labor and responsibilities, as well as unequal access to resources negatively affected women’s health.

As for the definition of a ‘good modern wife’, one Quora user had an interesting take saying;

“The same as a good husband. A partner who doesn’t count who did what, who puts their partner ahead of themselves, and helps out, doesn’t try to be boss, but takes the lead where they know more and acts as support in the opposite situation.”
