Sportswoman Sania Mirza is done with women being blamed for their husband’s career failures. She called out this mindset in the sub-continent that discourages men from being supportive of their wife’s career.

The discussion came up as the tennis star talked about her tweet which applauded Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc for always supporting his wife. She explained it all during her appearance on Jemimah Rodrigues and Smriti Mandhana’s YouTube chat show ‘Double Trouble‘.

Sania Mirza called out how some men in the subcontinent are ridiculed for supporting their wife’s career. There’s a stark double standard here.

“It was funny because I think probably me and Anushka relate to this the most because I think that whenever our husbands perform it’s because of them and when they don’t perform it’s because of us.”

It’s odd how we’re dead set on the maxim that ‘behind a successful man is a woman’, rather believing that partners be supportive towards each other’s careers.

“When he (Starc) went back to his wife to watch the World Cup final and everybody was hailing him, …. I was trying to just picture Shoaib doing that for me and I was like, hell would have broken loose if that would have happened. They would have said that he is such a joru ka ghulam, he is going and watching a women’s match.”

This expectation for women to sacrifice for their husband’s career leads to them being blamed for their failures.

Although Sania Mirza’s tweet was originally meant as a joke, she revealed that it also brings up the deeper issue that a woman is a distraction and not a strength.

“Humor brings out the truth in many things,”

She pointed out how this is a cultural issue that’s not rooted in rationality. While the subcontinent blames women for a man’s failures, it also discourages men from supporting their partners with the label ‘joru ka ghulam‘ (a wife’s slave).

“It’s like oh, if your girlfriend is there or your wife is there, oh he must be distracted because they’re going out for dinner later. That doesn’t even make any sense,”
