Sean “Diddy” Combs has made a major addition to his legal defense, enlisting Brian Steel—the high-profile attorney renowned for his work in rapper Young Thug’s ongoing YSL trial.
The move comes as jury selection for Combs’ racketeering case is set to begin on May 5, signaling a strategic shift as the music mogul faces serious federal charges.
According to a court filing submitted Tuesday, Brian Steel is seeking special permission to join the case as an out-of-state lawyer. Steel’s reputation precedes him: he is known for his sharp courtroom presence and unwavering commitment to his clients, even in the face of controversy.
He drew national attention during the YSL trial when he was arrested on-camera for refusing to disclose how he obtained information about a confidential conversation between the judge, prosecutors, and a witness. The contempt charge was later dropped, and the judge was removed from the case, further cementing Steel’s status as a fearless and principled advocate.
“Brian is a legend, especially after YSL,” said Douglas Weinstein, co-counsel in the YSL case. “His insights, tenacity, and character will be a phenomenal addition to Mr. Combs’ team. He’s a legend in Georgia.”
55-year-old Sean Combs, who goes by P. Diddy Puff Daddy or ‘Love,’ is currently facing a racketeering conspiracy charge, accused of leading a criminal enterprise that trafficked women and used violence, threats, and manipulation for his own “sexual gratification.”
He has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody at a federal detention center in Brooklyn following his September arrest.
Steel’s addition to the defense team comes amid speculation that Los Angeles attorney Mark Geragos might also join the case. While Geragos’ daughter, Teny Geragos, is already representing Combs, Mark Geragos has been occupied with other high-profile cases.
