Australian social worker and wife of Wasim Akram, Shaniera Akram recently took to her Twitter account to show her support for the University of Lahore students who were expelled. Now getting popular as the ‘PDA couple’, the students stirred outrage as netizens opposed their acts inside the premises of their university.
What is Shaniera Akram talking about?
The two students, later identified as Hadiqa Javaid and Shehryar Ahmed, were caught on camera. The girl was seen proposing to a boy she likes, and the two later embraced each other – and there might have also been a kiss on the cheek as well.
This video spread on the internet like wildfire and netizens were demanding that the university take strict action against the two. Let’s take a look at the video first:
Netizens React
Social media users were outraged to see the students involved in PDA. Many were questioning their actions on moral grounds, and some also questioned their religious beliefs. Lets’ take a look at some of these reactions:
⚠️ Is it Islamic Republic of Pakistan's educational institute? A girl proposed her Boyfriend publicly in University of Lahore. A big shame for @ULahore 's administration!!! pic.twitter.com/seSvwTOZ85

The University of Lahore takes action against the couple
The University of Lahore heard the majority of the public’s concerns and took strict action against the PDA couple. Both Hadiqa Javaid and Shehryar Ahmed have been expelled. In addition to this, their pictures have been posted on campus with the notice mentioning that these two are not allowed on campus.
Shaniera Akram speaks up in favour of the students
In a Tweet, that was later deleted, Shaniera Akram questioned why the couple was being targeted. Additionally, she also asked netizens if the reactions would have been the same if a male student had been on the ‘proposing’ side of things.
Let’s talk about it ? Why are we all upset ? Is it the PDA? The proposal on university grounds ? Or the fact that a woman did it? Would it be the same out rage had the student who proposed was a man ?
In another now-deleted post, she mentioned how the outrage on this PDA reflects society’s double standards.
75% of our country is under the age of 30,Most of them are on social media. Our celebrities & sports stars propose, show affection or date in public but it’s not ok for our youth to do so?That’s double standards to the next level.I say Let the youth of today live their own life !
These two posts were deleted by the 37-year-old. She also posted two other Tweets where she further explained her entrenched point of view.
Apply all the rules you want but you can’t expel love! It’s in our hearts, it’s the best part about being young and it what makes life worth living! You learn more about love than you can ever learn at an institution ❤️

We just celebrated International women’s day and here we are with a top University expelling a young woman for having the confidence and empowerment to ask a man to marry her amongst the security of her peers. What kind of example are we setting here ? #CantExpelLove
