While the Lux Style Awards 2019 was mired in controversy with the whole sexual harassment scandal regarding Ali Zafar and Meesha Shafi, that did not stop most stars from showing up.

And now it seems like LSA is still being in the news, and for wrong reasons. We know that showbiz stars withdrew their nominations to register their protest, and now, even as the show has ended, the controversy drags on. This time by Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy.

Back in 2012, the Oscar winner received the Lux Lifetime Achievement award. The women rights activist is now giving back her award because of the LSA controversy.

The entire LSA controversy revolves around Ali Zafar being nominated for Best Actor in LSA 2019.

Now Sharmeen Obaid made it clear in a Facebook conversation with designer Mohsin Sayeed that she is not okay with things as they are.

While the film-maker did not name any names, she made it clear she’s ‘tired of people pretending to be behind the me too movement‘. This was shade towards everyone that showed up to the LSAs. Sharmeen couldn’t attend it since she was out of the country during that time.

Despite a select handful, the entire biz was there.

“Lux Style Awards should have been boycotted by anyone with a spine!”

LSA Controversy

Infuriated that an alleged sex offender has been nominated, Mesha Shafi and many people in her corner withdrew their nominations.

It should be noted that in 2018, the LSAs wore black in solidarity with the #MeToo Movement. Shehzad Roy even performed “Kiya derta hai” along with 36 other big names including Aima Baig and Gohar Mumtaz.

LSA organizer Frieha Altaf went as far as to say “Lux Style Awards 2018 will serve as the (MeToo) movement’s launchpad.”

Yet in 2019 they nominate a performer embroiled in an alleged sexual harassment case. That’s when Mesha Shafi, Eman Suleman, Rubbab Ali, as well as make-up artists Saima Bargfrede and Fatima Nasir, the brand Generation, and the band Sketches withdrew nominations.

Meanwhile, director Jami made a public social media post of himself throwing out his LSA award in the trash.

Despite these statements, everyone else including celebrities that condemned sexual harassment, were all dolled up for the event.

Oscar Winning Director

Pakistani film-maker Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy is known for her Oscar-winning documentaries. Chinoy won the prestigious Oscar twice for documentary films that focused on women rights’ issues. Her second Oscar pushed for a law change, making honor killing punishable by law, even if the victims kin chose to pardon the offender.

The law was lauded for taking the necessary legislative steps to ensure the protection of women in Pakistan against honor killings.

SOC also collaborated with Lebron James on the HBO Sports documentary Student Athlete, to raise awareness about the exploitation of athletes in high-revenue collegiate sports.
