Oscar-winning Pakistani filmmaker, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has been tapped to helm a new Star Wars film with Damon Lindelof and an additional co-writer. She becomes the first woman and the first person of color to direct a Star Wars film.

The movie is being hyped as the first major big-screen release for Lucasfilm after 2019’s Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker. According to the sources, the Lucasfilm project is currently in the scripting stage.

As Star Wars projects continue to be one of the most guarded secrets of Hollywood, the content and focus of the upcoming project have been kept well under wraps.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is an Oscar and Emmy-winning director known for documentaries such as Saving Face and A Girl in the River, The Price of Forgiveness. She is currently involved in directing Paramount’s adaptation of the novel Brilliance, produced by Will Smith.

Obaid-Chinoy recently directed a show for Disney’s Ms. Marvel which is a short series with a Pakistani girl as the lead. The show was not only hailed for representing a large segment of people that only makes it onscreen as side characters, if at all, but also for its storyline and direction.
