Looks like Korean content is set to dominate the competitive sphere surrounding the Academy Awards. From Parasite kicking it out of the ballpark to Squid Game making history at the Emmy Awards.
Squid Game made history by becoming the first foreign-language television show to take home the top awards at the Emmy Awards yesterday.
This includes Lee Jung-jae, who plays player 456, bagging the award for Best Actor, Hwang Dong-hyuk being awarded the Best Director award. A huge milestone for Asians and Koreans in particular, as this marks the first win by an Asian in the category.
Needless to say, this is as much a milestone as back when South Korean film Parasite swept the Oscars 2020 bagging award after award.
Lee Jung-jae, a newcomer that got his big break with his role in the South Korean thriller, thanked the team behind Squid Game for ‘making realistic problems we all have to face come to life so creatively on the screen‘.
Meanwhile, at the Emmy red carpet, the series’ creator Hwang Dong-hyuk teasing some details of Season 2 of the Netflix smash hit. He told Deadline that Lee Jung-jae’s character Seong Gi-hun, otherwise known as Number 456, is out for revenge in the next season. Hwang said that the biggest change will be that he comes back with a different character, more serious.
Meanwhile, Lee Jung Jae told Deadline that he hasn’t even seen a script yet.
In June, Netflix officially confirmed the Squid Game S2, saying that Gi-Hun and the frontman will return, and the man in the suit ddakji might also be back. Additionally, we’ll be introduced to Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su.
