Sunita Marshall Sparks Controversy with Comments on Teenage Relationships

Pakistani actress Sunita Marshall has found herself at the center of a social media storm after her recent appearance on Nida Yasir’s popular talk show, where she described friendships and relationships between boys and girls during teenage years as a “normal” and “natural” part of growing up.

The remarks have drawn sharp criticism from netizens, who argue that such views clash with cultural and religious values in Pakistan.

During the candid discussion, Sunita emphasized the importance of open communication between spouses regarding their children’s social interactions. “Wives should inform and explain to their husbands about their children’s friendships and relationships in advance,” she said, adding that men, being “naturally more emotional and prone to anger,” might react strongly if they learn about such matters abruptly.

She suggested that in households with less-educated men, wives should take proactive steps to educate their husbands about teenage relationships to avoid conflict.

The Chup Raho actress further stated that forming relationships, including having girlfriends or boyfriends, is a common occurrence during adolescence. “It’s a natural process,” she remarked, though she clarified that her children, who are still young, are not yet at that stage. “If they have such relationships, I wouldn’t know about it,” she added with a light-hearted tone.

Sunita’s comments, particularly her normalization of teenage relationships, quickly went viral on platforms like X, where users expressed strong disapproval. Many criticized her for promoting views they deemed incompatible with Pakistan’s Islamic and cultural norms. “In our Pakistani and Islamic society, such relationships between boys and girls are not normal; they’re wrong,” one user posted. Another wrote, “Sunita Marshall should be more mindful of our values before making such statements on national TV.”

The backlash highlights the sensitivity surrounding discussions of youth relationships in Pakistan, where conservative values often shape societal expectations. Critics argued that Sunita’s remarks could mislead young audiences, while a small minority defended her, praising her for advocating open communication within families.

Sunita, who has been a prominent figure in the Pakistani entertainment industry for over two decades, is known for her roles in dramas like Mera Saaein and Khuda Aur Muhabbat. Married to actor Hassan Ahmed, she often shares glimpses of her family life on social media, where she enjoys a following of over 1 million on Instagram.
