Teen Creates Diverse ‘Gender-Balanced Playing Cards’ [Pictures]

The 16-year-old has already sold over 50,000 decks.

Gender roles are pushed on children from a very young age, with little things like colors to toys. That’s why one teen created a set of ‘gender-balanced playing cards’, Queeng.

Maayan Segal released her playing card set, Queeng, three years ago and sold over 50,000 decks. At the age of just 16-years-old, this young woman created a gender-balanced deck with equal king and queen cards, two princesses and princes instead of four jacks, and a female joker.

Now she’s created another set of ‘gender-balanced playing cards’ that is also inclusive and diverse. This new set is also racially and ethnically diverse with hand-drawn cards that represent a range of skin tones and facial features.

CNN reports this teen went back to the drawing board despite the success of her first ‘gender-balanced playing card set’.

“We went back to the drawing board and started from scratch, … We wanted to make a deck that truly represents our world and celebrates our beautiful range of cultures and appearances!”

Now Queeng has ‘Monarch’ cards, which can be male or female, to replace the value of former king cards. Meanwhile, queen cards have been replaced by duchess and duke cards. For jacks, there are princess and prince cards.

Maayan Segal wrote on her Indiegogo campaign page that supporting Queeng‘s mission supports the idea that;

“Men and women, along with all races and ethnicities, are equal, … Backers will also support a kick-ass example of young entrepreneurship,”
