So let’s try and narrow down this year’s top 5, with some honorable mentions.

Shanghai, China

Shanghai is China’s biggest city and this year they had the best New Year’s Eve celebration. China swapped traditional fireworks with an elaborate drone display. That really knocked the ball out of the ballpark. It’s like we’ve been doing it all wrong this whole time.

With global warming rising, perhaps these drone displays are a far greener option compared to fireworks.

New York City, United States

Speaking of global warming, NYC decided to let ‘climate change combatants, high school science teachers and students’ drop the ball this New Year’s Eve. Stilled didn’t go easy on the confetti and fireworks.

Another political statement was that NYC’s Time Square was transformed into ‘the safest place on Earth‘ for the New Year’s celebrations.

There were numerous security measures in place with steps of screening, from magnetometers to explosive vapor canines.

London, United Kingdom

London used New Year’s Eve to promote Euro 2020. The roar of football anthems such as Three Lions made it obvious the country is excited about hosting the football tournament.

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan had promised the ‘best display the capital has ever seen’. It featured music from Stormzy, Wiley, and Bastille. It looked like the city’s Mayor Saqib Khan’s attempt to restore the city’s inclusive and open image amid all that ‘Brexit chatter’.

One thing didn’t change at all, and that was the explosive firework display.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Dubai really took advantage of the ‘world’s tallest building,’ lighting up the Burj Khalifa as the fireworks illuminated the sky overhead.
