Top Gun: Maverick is a ‘Love Letter to Aviation’

As one of the producers, Tom Cruise has described the film as a “love letter to aviation.” Makes sense when we see Cruise as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, an aging pilot who flat out refuses to retire, despite failing to rise up the ranks.

We see Ed Harris playing Maverick’s superior officer in the trailer. The man cites all of Captain Pete Mitchell’s accomplishments over 30 plus years of service. Then he expresses his astonishment about how someone like Maverick isn’t decorated, despite his brilliant career as a fighter pilot.

“You can’t get a promotion, you won’t retire and despite your best efforts you refuse to die….You should be a two-star Admiral by now, but here you are, Captain.”

Ed Harris plays Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell’s high ranking officer in Top Gun: Maverick

The movie will follow Pete ‘Maverick‘ as he struggles for survival as an instructor in a technologically-charged era of military arms. Will these unmanned drones drive pilots like Captain Pete Mitchell to extinction?

“You’re kind is headed for extinction.”

Wait a Little Longer

Top Gun, the 1986 smash action film, made Cruise a household name. The film grew a cult following, and many awaited the return of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in a sequel. Now the wait is over.

“You all have asked for many, many years.. I travel around the world, people say, why don t you do another one, when are you are going to do another one?”

Originally the movie was slated for release in 2019, but the elaborate flight sequences caused delays. Fans have waited so long, they might as well wait a little longer and let the film-makers really deliver.

Cruise adds:

“Thirty-four years you guys have been very patient with me, and I felt it was my responsibility to finally really deliver for you.”

Tom revealed that all the flight sequences in the film are real, as the film-makers are working with the United States Navy.

“I really wanted to give you all an experience of what it is to be inside that aircraft.”
