These Tired and Hated Trends in Pakistani Dramas Need to Go

Enough is enough.

pakistani dramas

There used to be a time when the Pakistani television industry produced wholesome content. Dramas like Tanhaiyan, Anghan Terha, Dhoop Kinare, Ankahi, etc are still watched and celebrated today. The reason? People could relate to the story and the characters, even decades after these famous dramas first aired.

With more and more releases, the content in Pakistani dramas has gone downhill. Some of the most common themes present in today’s Pakistani dramas are:

  • sister rivalry,
  • divorce,
  • an affair,
  • second marriage,
  • jealousy and revenge,
  • saas-bahu fights over a man who is emotionally incapable of catering to their needs.

These and a lot of other problematic and disturbing elements have become the new trend in many Pakistani dramas. They do not make any sense and they definitely do no good to the viewers.

The question becomes – why is this type of content still being produced and promoted by our writers, directors, producers, and actors?

This is Neither Entertainment Nor Education

Like it or not, Meray Pass Tum Ho, Jhooti, Dil Ruba, Thora Sa Haq, and plenty of other TV dramas have more or less the same plot. Just add a pinch of garam masala and there you have it, a new concoction of mainstream ideas which we like to call as ‘a thrilling upcoming drama.’

Recently, ARY released the teasers of its new project Jalan starring Minal Khan, Emmad Irfani and Areeba Habib. With a recycled plot of sister coveting her brother-in-law, it has invited a lot of consternation on social media.

Ironically, some Pakistani celebrities believe that these dramas are good content while opposing the airing of Turkish drama serials like Ertugrul – a show that is fresh, has a strong plot and interesting characters.

So why is it that the public should quit watching a phenomenal drama over something that neither educates nor entertain?
