Twitter Suspends Sami Khan for Pro-Kashmir Tweet

Seriously Twitter?

Sami Khan

There’s been a surge in Pakistani Twitter accounts getting suspended recently, mostly because of their pro-Kashmir stance. Actor Sami Khan shared that his Twitter account is also among the casualties.

But Sami Khan is being told that his account has been suspended for ‘impersonation.’ The Wrong No. actor received a Twitter notification that it is against community standards, and the account is being suspended for impersonation.

Now here’s where it gets mighty confusing. Sami Khan is barely active on Twitter. When he is active all he posts are pictures and things about his upcoming projects.

Then again, he is also a pro-Kashmir advocate. So it doesn’t take much to put two and two together.

Sami Khan is tired of Twitter’s shambolic practices

Personally, Sami Khan no longer wants to stay on the platform, given how openly and wrongly it has gone with its discriminatory policies.

His fans are urging the actor to re-consider his move to take a break as it will mean the loss of a pro-Kashmir voice on Twitter.

Sami isn’t the only Pakistani celeb whose account was suspended by the micro-blogging platform.

Director Nabeel Qureshi’s Twitter account was also suspended amid the crackdown on pro-Kashmir accounts. His account was restored with the help of Director General Inter-Services Public Relations and Nabeel thanked him later on Twitter too.

Journalist Fasi Zaka suffered a similar fate. All these accounts were reported of ‘impersonation’.

Who is Responsible?

Now, who would do that? Turns out an Indian Bakht group of trolls who called themselves BMJ Youth have manipulated Twitter’s rules for their own ends.

Apparently a lot of fake complaints got these Pakistani accounts suspended.

Twitter War on Kashmir

The suspension of solely Pakistani Twitter accounts was liked to their pro-Kashmir stance amid India’s abrogation of Kashmir’s independence.

Some 200 Twitter accounts were suspended for sharing information on the arrest of Kashmiri political leaders in Indian Occupied Kashmir and the human rights abuses.

There’s a reason why Twitter has discriminated against Pakistani users. Turns out that Twitter has a regional office in India but not Pakistan. It was suggested that this office is responsible for the crackdown against Pakistani users. In this case, the employees of Twitter’s regional office clearly violated the company policy to ensure impartiality and illegal.

Others have accused Twitter of prioritizing Indian voices and censoring Kashmiri and Pakistani voices that criticize the Indian government.

Pakistani authorities reached out to Twitter’s regional office in Dubai in this regard.

Twitter denied all these allegations and their spokesperson told Dawn that:

“Our user policies ensure impartiality, regardless of the user’s country of origin or political beliefs, with a spokesperson for the social media platform……… there’s no political bias in its content review teams that determine what content is considered a violation of its rules.”

Further trying to deny the serious allegations, the spokesperson refused to comment on the reasons 200 individual accounts in Pakistan had been suspending for posting about Kashmir. He said:

“We don’t comment on individual accounts for privacy and security reasons.”
