Undertaker Reveals that He Considered Leaving The WWE

What?

In the world of wrestling, the World Wrestling Entertainment (or WWE) is the biggest show on the planet with performers like The Rock, Stone Cold, John Cena becoming household names. Even among those giants, Mark Calaway’s Undertaker is the most respected and iconic in professional wrestling.

Though it is hard to imagine a wrestling promotion other than the WWE, there was once another promotion that was considered the company’s fiercest rival, WCW.

While it was eventually shut down and WWE reigned supreme, during the 90s, both companies were in a fierce ratings battle called the ‘Monday Night War’.

During that time many prominent wrestlers jumped ships, the likes of which include Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash and Bret Hart. Other wrestlers were also thinking about leaving for WCW, including The Undertaker!

The 55-year-old wrestler revealed in a recent podcast that he had once thought about leaving WWE due to frustrations with the creative department.

“There was a time I was so frustrated with our creative direction. We had a bunch of really goofy characters. They (WCW) are down there doing real angles. It was common knowledge that they opened up the checkbook. I was hearing guys talking about the money they are making. You would be able to get a good check and stay at home most of the time. Those thoughts were there. But, when it got down to it, I said I can’t. Obviously I’m not the best businessman but something inside me said you can’t leave here,” The Undertaker said.

If that would’ve happened, WCW would have succeeded in putting WWE out of business, as they were very close to doing so. Only due to legendary wrestlers like The Undertaker, The Rock and Stone Cold, WWE won the ratings war and became the global franchise that it is now.

Though fun fact, the Undertaker did start his career in WCW, but he was known as Mean Mark Calaway. He’s retired now, and you can watch Mark Calaway’s journey as The Undertaker on his new documentary The Last Ride.
