The White House’s Twitter account just unfollowed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indians are losing it. They also allegedly unfollowed the Indian President and Prime Minister’s office accounts as well.
This really goes to show relationships aren’t what they seem on social media.
2 weeks ago, a diplomatic victory was claimed as @whitehouse followed @narendramodi & several Indian accounts, post export of anti-malarial drugs
We tracked following behavior.
Now @narendramodi & rest have been unfollowed.
Do we get the drugs back, or was 2 weeks the deal? pic.twitter.com/SUyXyqGJyN

The White House Twitter account started following Indian PM Narendra Modi after India sent the United States hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19. This made PM Modi the first world leader to be followed by the White House. Maybe it was a relationship of necessity, as Jane Austin warned us about this?

It later turned out that the anti-malarial drug does not work as a treatment for the Coronavirus and only helps a select few people.
Maybe that’s why the White House backtracked on their follow? Whatever the reason Indians aren’t taking this lightly. As one Twitter user put it;
“India will not forget this petty act of the US”.
pic.twitter.com/hABXggdzLe

The outrage does not end there. Like any messy break-up, India wants its stuff back:

Of course, Indian Twitter is rallying to unfollow the White House now. Maybe it was better they didn’t act extra to begin with.
All indians unfollow the white house and @realDonaldTrump , because he unfollow our PM . Please@PMOIndia @realDonaldTrump @narendramodi @aajtak @Republic_Bharat #unfollowtrump

Originally, the White House followed 13 accounts, all from the US. But just recently, they followed three non-US accounts – President of India, the Prime Minister’s office, and the Indian Embassy in Washington DC. So now that they unfollowed these Indian accounts, some people really don’t get what the fuss is about.
Because Donald Trump Bhai is our friend and we are doing what he wants.

On the other hand, some people speculate this has something to do with India landing on the US Commission on International Religious Freedom’s (USCIRF) list of ‘countries of particular concern‘.
First, The @WhiteHouse un-followed Modi on Twitter & then @USCIRF moved India to its category of greatest concern that would be subject to sanctions which reflects the current bitterness between the US & India.

We demand more from United States not to just unfollow modi on twitter. We also demand to have an sharp eye on Kashmir issue which is very salient issue for us and ask india to conduct a freedom memorandum. @WhiteHouse @realDonaldTrump https://t.co/ellxBe6qTP
