Women Chop Their Locks and Burn Hijabs in Support of Mahsa Amini

Iran doesn’t have the most favorable reputation when it comes to women’s rights and liberty. So, when a young woman, Mahsa Amini was killed in custody after being arrested by ‘moral police’, protests broke out.

Protests have broken out in solidarity with the deceased. With some Iranian women really making a point with #MahsaAmini. Under the hashtag, they are posting images of themselves chopping off their hair and burning hijabs.

The 22-year-old woman who was detained by the ‘morality cops’ in Iran for ‘improperly’ donning the hijab because she had not completely covered her hair. According to reports, witnesses have claimed that Mahsa Amini was beaten inside a police van. She was first taken to the hospital while in detention, where she fell into a coma and passed away.

So, women are pushing back against the police by publicly removing their hijabs and cutting their hair. Additionally, these posts can be seen on social media under #MahsaAmini really emphasizing the magnitude of the protests.

Further adding to the problem as violence from authorities escalate. Especially when people are not just protesting against the moral policing of women but also police brutality.

According to the reports, the incident is said to have occurred on September 13 when Mahsa Amini, a native of Saghez, Iran, traveled to Tehran. It was supposed to be a fun trip, but that cost her life. She had been with her brother Kiarash at the entrance to the Shahid Haghani Expressway when the ‘Morality Police’ came and arrested her for a one-hour ‘re-education class’.
