Women Hang Their Dupattas at F-9 Park in Protest After Horrific Gang-Rape Incident

People demanded justice and safety of women in public spaces during their peaceful demonstration

Hundreds of women‘s rights activists and local citizens protested against sexual violence in Pakistan today after a woman was gang-raped by men in Fatima Jinnah Park (F-9 Park), Islamabad.

Women hung their dupattas on the gates of Fatima Jinnah Park in the F-9 sector in protest of the recent event that sent shockwaves nationwide.

People demanded justice and safety of women in public spaces during their peaceful demonstration at F-9 Park and called on the authorities to take immediate action against the culprits.

For those who are unaware, a young woman was sexually assaulted by two men on Thursday night. The victim and her male colleague were ambushed by two individuals who held her at gunpoint. The two men proceeded to rape and brutally assaulted the woman, before fleeing the scene.

A first information report (FIR) was filed under Section 376 (punishment for rape) at the capital city’s Margalla Police Station by the women on the same night. Islamabad police issued a sketch of one of the suspects involved in the rape on Sunday.

According to police spokesperson, Jawad Taqi, the sketch was made with the help of the victim and it will be matched with the CCTV footage from the park’s premises.

The incident in F-9 Park is just one of many cases of sexual assault reported in Pakistan recently. The increasing number of attacks on women in public spaces has sparked nationwide outrage.
