Yasir Hussain Gets Called Out By Anoshey Ashraf Over ‘Turkish Celebrity Hate’

Here’s what actually happened.

Yasir Hussain

Yasir Hussain has been at the center of another controversy as his harsh views regarding Ertugrul and foreign actors (most probably Turkish ones) working in Pakistan has upset netizens.

The actor has tried conveying the message of ‘nationalism’ and ‘promoting local talent’ in the past. However, his choice of words and patronizing behavior earlier didn’t win him any admirers.

Perhaps, this time he was also trying to express his views in a civil way. However, judging by people’s reactions, it seems that he may have ended up creating a whole new narrative of disrespecting foreign actors.

Yasir Hussain courts controversy

It all started when Yasir Hussain shared Diva Magazine‘s post featuring pictures of two Pakistani individuals who were dressed up as the characters from Diriliş: Ertuğrul. The post deemed them as the ‘Pakistani Turgut and Pakistani Ertugrul’.

Now here’s what happened next. According to the Jhooti actor, he says that the two individuals who dressed up as Ertugrul cast members will never get the attention and coverage because ‘ghar ki murghi daal barabar’ (a common idiom used to imply that we don’t value what we have and are familiar with, but think that what we don’t have is better and covet it).

What Happened Over Here?

What was supposed to be a general comment in favor of ‘local talent’, turned into a heated debate as some publications twisted his words.

The idiom he used is pretty common and we all know what that means. However, the word ‘kachra‘ (garbage) painted a negative picture for fans of Ertugrul.

Some publications took his quotes out of context and we happened to see titles like “Yasir Hussain calls Ertugrul stars garbage.”.

Following that, netizens started a trend of #YasirHussainIsTheRealGarbage, expressing their disappointment.

The Karachi Se Lahore actor called out the publications for twisting his words and asked them to stop making news out of everything he says.

Anoushey Ashraf calls him out

This instigated a virtual feud among Yasir Hussain and VJ-cum-actress Anoushey Ashraf.

She took to the comment section of Diva Magazine’s post and wrote,

“Let’s just gently remind Yasir that NO one is kachra for one. And even if their work isn’t at par to his liking, actors from around the world must be respected. It should be an unspoken ‘bond’ of mutual respect between artists… Having said that, Ertugrul is far from garbage. If anything, the series is an eye opener.

In his response, Yasir said that he never mentioned Ertugrul and reiterated how we undermine local productions and go after foreign ones because we think they are better. So far, Yasir did try to make people understand what he was conveying. But alas, here’s what happened next.

While voicing his concerns for the local industry, Yasir went a little overboard and said that Anoushay won’t understand him because she has spoken English her whole life. Though we all think that the phrase ‘lost in translation’ was valid here, we think Yasir’s condescending tone didn’t win him any brownie points either.

Did Yasir Do the Right Thing?

While we do understand where he is coming from and his concerns for the country are well appreciated, but the actor has to pay attention to the kind of words he chooses for his fellow artists.

In another comment, Anoushey Ashraf reminded him that having an Indian sari or a Japanese car or even listening to English songs, doesn’t make anyone any less of a Pakistani. She voiced her opinion in a respectful manner and we hope this is the end to the long debate.

“It’s okay if he thinks I misunderstood him. But for him to insinuate that a fellow Pakistani isn’t Pakistani enough because she speaks English or uses a Japanese istri because it ‘may’ be of better quality is not entirely fair. It’s dangerous to insinuate I’m not Pakistani enough because I chose to purchase an Indian saari.”

She went on to say,

“Next time some American friends of mine ask for khaadi Kurtas I’ll just tell them they’re just not good enough Americans. We all support local and always will. Please do not mix the two. It isnt so black and white.”

She also asked netizens not to criticize him because like everyone, he has the right to speak as well.

So there you have it. The complete story of what Yasir Hussain said this time.
