Punjab Laptops Get Wrecked by Twisted Media

Punjab’s laptop scheme has become controversial, so is the case with Mr. Shahbaz Sharif. It is yet to ascertain if this whole campaign against Mr. Sharif is outcome of Prime Minister’s conviction, as political silos are hot like hell, or allegations against laptop scheme are for real. We will try to evaluate few of them below.

From what it appears, all political parties are currently doing their best to outperform others in blames, accusations, allegations and what not. Media has apparently decided not to remain behind too.

This whole scenario has engulfed the laptop scandal with fierce beating that it got from media with some sensitive and reasonable questions. But at the same time media men are throwing serious rubbish, something that they are notorious for.

Let’s take an example of Mubashir Luqman. Before we get to our discussion, please watch this video clip from his show on Dunya TV on May 1st, 2012:

I won’t discuss the pricing of laptops or the decision of Punjab government to give away laptops instead of building schools – this is something that can be argued and should be argued for better and transparent governance.

But I will rather focus on other matters such as Mr. Luqman has claimed that the Laptops were not manufactured by Dell company, instead they were manufactured in China. Probably he is of the view that these laptops are china-made fake copies of dell. Sir; you need to pay a visit to computer market and look at the back side of laptops to straighten your facts. It will help.

Then he goes on to compare Youth initiative laptops with another model of dell without mentioning the model of laptop. Following is the screenshot of the comparison:

Mr. Luqman further alleges that operating system in Punjab Laptops is not original but a pirated copy of Microsoft Windows. He also regrets that Punjab government could be in real trouble if Microsoft gets notice of this incident. Maybe Mr. Luqman was misinformed on this as Punjab Youth Laptops come with Ubuntu OS – which is an open source free operating system.

Mubashir Luqman astonished everyone by claiming that Punjab Laptops (which are actually Dell Inspiron N4050 with variations in processor and RAM) is a 15 years old technology. Well I am not kidding here, you can watch above video yourself to see what exactly he said.

Maybe Mr. Luqman hadn’t the opportunity to buy or operate a computer 15 years ago (somewhere around 1997) when we had to pay the price of a laptop for just 16 MB Ram.

Mr. Mubashir Luqman also terms Punjab Youth Laptop 400 times slower than the original Dell laptop without mentioning his gauges.

Again, this whole scheme could be a waste of money. Maybe 4 billion rupees could have been used for better education, or maybe for another education department for lot better means. But it is really shocking, disgraceful and shameful to twist facts, rather telling direct lies, just to support an argument.

Even worse, this TV show was translated and distributed by a newswire (Online News Network) to whole media. They went even further by claiming that actual price of laptop was Rs. 19,500 which was bought by Punjab Government for Rs. 37,700.

I dont know what exactly is the motive behind giving laptops, but like Dr. Abdul Qadeer said ” setting up free computer labs for underprivileged would have been a better idea”. And yes, Moby Luqman did a blunder with that 15 year figure. According to my information, first Dual Core 2.0 was released somewhere in 2006. Not exactly sure what variant are the Punjab laptops using.

    1. He got this laptop for Rs 20,000 because someone sold it very cheap for money. i3 is the very same as this dual core in benchmarks. Actually i3 & i5 (some models) both are dual cores with just a little better like 10% performance.
    
    2. Regarding Chinese copy, it’s not true. It’s Original Dell brand. If it is a Chinese copy, it’s product & serial number will never match at dell.com. Every brand has their production house in China. If you will buy laptop in USA, you will find “Made In China” on it too. I have personal experience.
    
    3. If Microsoft sues Punjab Govt. Punjab govt will easily win. Because Punjab Govt. is giving laptop with Ubuntu. If a user changes it to Microsoft Windows, then it’s not Punjab Govt. fault. It’s buyer who is violating copyright. Microsoft is not that blind that they couldn’t notice of such a big project. They are very well aware, but they cannot sue Punjab govt on it. Because govt will win & in counter case, Microsoft will have to pay too much for penalty.

  FYI! Those laptops are not just having Dual Core processors but SANDY BRIDGE B950 Two Processors. Their is a big difference between performance of both of them. Sandy bridge processors were first introduced in 2011 thus is a latest tech from intel after IVY BRIDGE.
  
  Believe me or not but my Youth Laptop’s rating on Windows 8 is surprisingly high:
  Processor 5.9
  RAM 5.5
  Graphics 4.4
  Gaming Graphics 5.5
  Primary Hard disk 5.9
  (Thus Overall 4.3, one less than my friend’s Lenovo i5)
  That is a great rating level in this price range. Not to forget HD Graphics quality and build quality is superb.

What can i say?? I am speechless… If this is our Media than i have to say we dont need any enamies to fight with.. Our own ppl are sufficent for our self destruction.. These are orignol and quality laptops.. I myself installed Win 7 on 3 of these laptops..

I am a pti supporter (it is supposed that I have to disagree with Pmln) but fact is Mr Lucman in past too did very bias programmes against Pmln and Shareif brothers(He also remain minster in Musheraf care taker govt).

If there is a minor corruption in this scheme,still I think we need to appreciate this overall scheme. It is good step by punjab govt.Media trying to make this our habit that we go for negative side of any news/events.

Only issue with this scheme is, the money wasted in laptop ceremonies (like same color of t-shirts type things) and giving Half page News paper ad is bad…

Otherwise, Well done Punjab govt.

I am not supporting the fact the laptops should have been distributed, but here definitely the reality is being twisted. The anchor has forgotten the fact that instead of low literacy rates in Pakistan, many people still understand the difference between the processing speeds of both laptops. Shameful act again by Mubashir Luqman.

Although M.Lucman does quite good programs, but this program was definitely very fishy and he really messed up when said that technology is 15 years old and the original price is 19K or something.

Sahi keh raha hai, they purchased much expensive. I think he has no sound knowledge of terminology, thats why some confussion is there. Aamir sb you knw very well about Computers. CM distributed laptops are dual core processors & now it is time of i3.
Although both have two cores in each but dual core is old technology and max price of this unit is max 25K. and i3 costs approx 35-40.

Dell Inspiron N4050 with variation of Processor and RAM… it must be less than 30k and this point also has been ignored that when you get such products in bulk you also gets discounts in products and i m sure Punjab govt got them in factory price or maybe just little profit.

Mubashar luqman has a failed career in almost every organization he went to. Starting from Paktel where he was fired in 1994, than NTM, than world call. He was once almost arrested in UAE because of his brilliant idea of starting an Arabic playboy equivalent.

Funny how everyone has all of a sudden turned a blind eye to real issue which was massive irregularities on part of Punjab Government, well maybe the laptop is not available for 19k, but when you are purchasing a 110,000 laptops than the price should have been a lot less than the market price, it’s common sense that when you buy in bulk the price is decreased.

Moreover distribution of laptops to “self financed” students who pay half a million (minimum) every year ( which means that they are very well off (for those who don’t know)), similarly giving laptops to those who have a poor academic record as said by their own institutions just because they are MSF members?

And the award of contract to Hamza Shehbaz’s friend?

And spending millions on laptop distribution ceremonies?

And here we are discussing if Luqman used the correct tech terms or not.

Shameful on part of everyone who seems to be “okay” with this massive scandal at hand. It’s public money and there should be an inquiry into it, preferably a judicial inquiry. People don’t pay taxes for this.

Distributing the laptops, courage’s the students to get least 60% or whatever percentage to get a laptop, I was a middle level student who don’t want to top the board, university. So as i cannot come in top 10, so i was not awarded any gift by institution.

A very positive thing, to distribute among the students to courage them.

Dear today i want to inform you one more information regarding private companies, I work in Huawei Technologies Pakistan, and Huawei hire outsource staff through Peoples (outsource company), and Peoples provide laptops to worker for work… Now a days Peoples providing HP 4530s Laptops thats price are i think 40-45K, but Peoples takes 70-75K from Huawei against single Laptop..

Why Such type of anchors are blaming Punjab government, I think our most of students gets benefits from these laptops and they try to improve our country’s situation.

ppl made some noise about 2 big potential lawsuits microsofts and dells for pmln b/c of their pirated stuff.. and then they wrote what u posted (which i deleted) for the following reason… They did use pirated stuff.. soon after paindu league understood it’s wrong, (either microsoft contacted them..but some deal seemed to have been made b/c they have to give ppl microsoft courses now) .. and yes a lot of ppl were given out the other operating system.. a quick change after they understood the blunder made. Nevertheless microsoft laptops were given out. They distributed a huge amount.. and nothing was made in buge bulks..so the next production wasnt mcsoft. Pmln’s new lie is to deny.. always thinking ppl r stupid :) …but M.Lucman’s exposing segment was thorough and correct

Check the price of dual core processor Dell Laptop on http://www.myshop.com.pk/laptop-pakistan/dell-inspiron-5040-pakistan.html The price on the website is 44,900 which i way higher than 37,700. I want to clarify something here there is a difference if you want to buy laptop for individuals or companies/offices. Jaffer brothers is authorized provider of HP in Pakistan, you can check the difference between the laptop prices from Hafeez Center and Jaffer brothers, Jaffer brothers is on the higher side. The reason for it is mostly the computers in Hafeez center are brough into Pakistan through black channels and tax isnt paid on it. Most of the times they provide you international warranty which is cheaper than when you buy from authorized provider. When an individual buy a laptop, sale is not registered and the shopkeepers dont have to pay the taxes on it. Whereas if a company/govt procures laptop the sale get registered and provider has to pay the tax. So there is no comparison in price between a Laptop bought from Hafeez center and an authorized provider

ADMIN, WTF are you trying to conclude from Laptop Scheme when TIP (Tranparency Intl. Pakistan) gave clearence to it. There is no proof that this scheme is a scam. If there is any proof, why don’t anyone come up to Court?

This Mr. Mobashir Luqman don’t completely worked on this. He is just saying bulshits:
1. First of all, core 2 technology is not a 15 year old technology, this is a good aspects laptop. This can be around only 3 year old technology. But still considering in the industry as a good aspect laptop.
2. Mr. Mubashir also don’t know that DELL is manufacturing laptops in China now. I have recently purchased my Dell Laptop from local market that was also of China made
3. Dell Laptops also come with 14″ as well as 15″, so its again a bulshit that Dell manufacture only 15″ laptops
4. The Windows might be installed by someone in Hafeez center. The laptops originally issuing to the students by Punjab govt. are with Linux version that don’t require any license.

Mr. Mubassir Luqman has a good history of spreading wrong information. He just know that how to increase the rating of his program but don’t know that how to actually investigate the things and comes with reality.

I think there should be some audit of these black sheeps of Media

    me 2, I think ke jesy scholarships ke liye panel bethtey hain universities main. Student ke deserving hony ko check kerty hain (regardless how effective they are) wesy he laptop ke liye kerna chahye tha. PU main morning shift ke sab students ko diye gaye hain laptops without any merits and method. jab k evening main jo atay hain wo be merit pe he admission lety hain lakin zera kam merti hota hai. fee be double hoti hai, un main be deserving hoty hon be but kisi ko be nahi mila. isi liye last days jo protests ho rahy thy isi waja sy thy ke morning shift ke students ko line lagwa ke bant diye..
