Meizu 15 Series Smartphones Are Powerhouses with Samsung AMOLED Displays and More

Meizu has unveiled a trio of phones featuring Samsung-made Super AMOLED displays (for the top models) and decent internals.

The displays on all three variants – including the low-spec Meizu 15 lite – have 16:9 aspect ratios and trimmed bezels. Meizu 15 and 15 Plus both have a telephoto dual-lens combo while the 15 lite comes with a single rear lens instead.

Design & Display

Meizu 15 Plus

Let’s start with the most interesting one in the trio – Meizu 15 Plus comes with a massive 5.95-inch Super AMOLED panel with QHD resolution (1440 x 2560 pixels).

Unlike most Chinese manufacturers, Meizu does not seem to be planning to bring the iPhone X aesthetic to its devices and all three variants – Meizu 15 Plus, Meizu 15, and Meizu 15 lite – have notch-free displays.

As for the design, its almost the same in all three variants with a front-mounted fingerprint scanner. Rear cameras, rear flash, front-facing camera, and the home-button have Meizu’s signature “ring” shape and the notification LED is housed within the earpiece area. Moreover, its made up of a stainless steel aluminum composite material which is both sturdy and light.

Meizu 15

The middle one in the bunch – Meizu 15 packs a relatively smaller 5.46-inch display – also AMOLED – with a FHD (1080p) resolution.

Its design is more or less the same and we can see a similar dual-rear camera set up like the one in Meizu 15 Plus. The “ringed” Fingerprint sensor is mounted on the front as well.

Meizu 15 lite

Meizu 15 lite’s display is an LTPS IPS LCD instead, however, it has a size of 5.46-inches with a 1080p resolution just like Meizu 15.

As expected, its design is more towards simplicity and has a less-premium finish. Other than that, its fashioned with a similar design language as its siblings and also has a front-mounted fingerprint sensor.

Hardware & Storage

Meizu 15 Plus

The top-of-the-line 15 Plus is powered by an Octa-core Exynos 8895. This chipset was used in last year’s Samsung Galaxy S8. The GPU is Mali-G71 MP20 and the RAM is 6 GB.

Internal storage comes in two options – you can get it with either 64 or 128 GB storage, however, RAM stays at 6 GB in both options. Luckily, its storage is expandable via a microSD card slot up to 256 GB (uses SIM slot 2).

Meizu 15

This one has mid-tier specifications and runs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660. A decent Adreno 512 runs the graphics department and Meizu 15 comes with 4 GB of RAM.

Storage options are the same as Meizu 15 Plus – it comes in either 64 or 128 GB of internal storage. Similarly, internal storage can be expanded by up to 256 GB via microSD slot (uses SIM slot 2).

Meizu 15 lite

At the bottom, Meizu 15 lite packs a moderate Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 clocked at 2.2 GHz. GPU is Adreno 506 and RAM size is 4 GB as well.

Its only available with 64 GB internal storage expandable via microSD slot (uses SIM slot 2).

Camera & Software

Meizu 15 Plus

The company says that Meizu 15 Plus has the best camera set up the company has ever used. It consists of a telephoto-wide angle lens combo with 20 MP (f/2.3, 1.55 µm) and 12 MP (f/1.8, 1.55 µm) resolutions.

This set up promises 3X lossless zoom and is supposed to provide Huawei P20-level noise reduction features. Moreover, it has both EIS and OIS to improve stabilization and low-light photography.

Additionally, the rear ring-shaped flash has 6 LEDs and the selfie camera has a resolution of 20 MP. Oddly, Meizu 15 Plus will come with Android 7.1.2 Nougat with Flyme UI 7.0 on top. There’s no word on whether it will get an updated to Android Oreo or P or not.

Meizu 15

Meizu 15 has the same dual-lens set up as Meizu 15 Plus – 12+20 MP combo and 20 MP front-facing sensor – but, instead of having both EIS and OIS, this one only has OIS.

Similarly, it comes with Android 7.1.2 Nougat with a proprietary Flyme UI 7.0 layer on top.

Meizu 15 lite

This one has a single 12 MP (f/1.9, 1.4 µm) lens on the rear which features dual PDAF and a similar six-LED ring-shaped flash. It can shoot videos up to 1080p at 30 FPS. Front facing camera is the same 20 MP (f/2.0) shooter, just like its other siblings.

Out of the box, it will have Android 7.1.2 Nougat running Meizu’s Flyme UI 7.0 skin as well.
