The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has issued a show-cause notice to Warid Telecom (Pvt) Limited for not convening complete product information in an advertisement.
It’s not the first time CCP has engaged a telecom operator for their advertisements – earlier, Ufone and Zong were issued show cause notices for the same reason, which were withdrawn at the end.
It merits mentioning here that CCP has issued 5 orders till date under the charge of deceptive marketing in previous three years (for all the sectors, including Telecom).
However, if you are telecom user, I am sure you would be aware of the fact that cellular companies don’t communicate all the details in their 30 second TVC. Though you might see those second long term and conditions that fade away in less than a second.
In today’s show cause notice CCP said that Warid’s Minute Package isn’t relying the complete information to consumers/customers.
The show-cause notice stated that cellular operator’s advertisement is found in prima facie distributing false or misleading information to customers/consumers regarding the price, character and/or suitability for use of the product advertised in violation of section 10(2)(b) of the Act.
The advertisement does not disclose the tax to be charged on the advertised rate i.e 1.20/min, hence the consumers are not informed about the actual rate/price to be charged from them.
That’s sad to see the CCP ignoring Warids outstanding services and the way its benefiting the communication needs of Pakistan. see how government bodies disturb the foreign investors.
CCP is a government body and it needs no introduction. They have recently penalized Ufone and Zong both.

Just because a company does good does not mean it cannot be penalized when it does bad.

Did you even read the article? Ufone and Zong both got notices earlier. Presumably they rectified the situation.

Warid announced by SMS to their customers this package in Ramadan, call free after 3 minutes. But what actually customers are missing and how much they will have to pay after their F&F list is wiped they create it again and pay for it. But terms and conditions are on their website which not everyone can read.

I once been to CCP office and all the staff was over 50 years on avg.
All sarkari culture and alot of corruption in it.
A senior official of CCP has been charged for taking undercover money from a Paint company (with tokens) for re-narrating the case.
Interestingly that officer visited the place of Paint owner who later file complaint against CCP officer as he was not happy with the deal.

Yaar warid bagher btae changing krta he glow ka rate 2.25+tex se 2.99+tex phr 1st cal par additional 1+tex charg. Ye inho ne pehle inform nai kia. Ye apne customer se bohut kuch chupate hen eid par glow ka genta 15 mint ka ho jata he last year 15 mint ka tha. Pata nai log q bewaqoof hen jo warid ki chalakian nai samjte. Warid ne hamesha chargs barhae hen.
I think a notice is good for everyone to keep a wide eye on it’s coming days
I think Warid is the only telecom operator with extreme transparency that no one offers.
I had some very bad experience with Mobilink and Telenor billing. Their postpay is absolutely poorer and then a lot of network issues, specially when traveling.
I ported in to Warid and I am very satisfied.

Ufone is advertising 30 sec offer as “OFFER” but offer subscribe krte he 30sec offer apka current package ban jata ha.i was satisfied with lady package,,just took 30 sec offer to get discount on other network calls bt lady package gone after subscribing to 30 sec offer.
Dear Saima, you can dial 0321 321 321 1 from any mobile number to place request for MNP. i did the same about a month back. I find Warid to be the best really.

CCP is doing a good job. It has a responsibility to ensure that all companies operating in the market do not indulge in to anti-competitive activities, and the deceptive marketing practices is one of these. The companies are supposed to give their consumers a complete picture about their products or services. As this will help consumers to make informed decisions.
