Zong to Have 3,000 4G and 5,500 3G Cell Sites by Year End: CEO

Zong will have over 3,000 4G and 5,500 3G cell sites by year end, said Mr. Liu Dianfeng, Chairman and CEO of Zong, during an exclusive interview with ProPakistani on the sidelines of recently conducted training session for PTA officials at Zong Headquarters in Islamabad.

He said that his company has already deployed more than 500 4G cell sites in Pakistan while another 3700 cell sites are now 3G enabled.

CEO said that Zong has invested over USD 300 million dollar in Pakistan for newer technologies, especially in 4G; despite the fact that penetration of 4G compatible handsets in Pakistan is low, but its growing fast enough to give his company the required confidence to invest heavily in 4G.

Mr. Liu said that there is tremendous potential for data services in Pakistan, especially because fixed line services cannot fulfil the market demand and this is where mobile broadband is going to play a crucial role. For the purpose, Zong customers should expect a series of dongle and wingle products during coming months.

Zong CEO said that definition for quality of services for data services should be revised. Instead of any benchmarks, he said, telcos will have to monitor customers’ experience to meet quality of service standards. For example, if there’s this customer who can’t access a website just because the server is down, then there is nothing much a telco can do, unless these websites are hosted at a tele-host with-in the telco.

Mr. Liu said that they are in process of taking on-board popular internet companies for getting them hosted on Zong’s tele-host to ensure smooth end-to-end connectivity and quality of service.
