PM Shehbaz Inaugurates Robotics Expo in Islamabad

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated the Indus Robotics and Autonomous Systems Expo 2026 in Islamabad on Tuesday, saying the event reflects Pakistan’s resolve to become a major player in 21st-century technologies.

Addressing the ceremony, the prime minister said robotics and autonomous systems are already transforming key sectors, especially agriculture. He said these technologies help farmers detect crop stress, use water, fertiliser and pesticides more efficiently, and respond better to climate challenges.

Shehbaz Sharif also said autonomous systems can improve disaster response by helping rescue teams reach affected areas and support relief operations more effectively.

Highlighting Pakistan’s progress in indigenous technology, he said the country has made significant advances in defence and security systems. He added that the armed forces, under the leadership of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, have adopted advanced technologies developed within Pakistan.

The prime minister said several advanced simulators are now being manufactured and assembled locally, while drones have reached more than 60 per cent indigenisation. He praised scientists, engineers, technocrats and professionals for strengthening the country’s technological capabilities.

Referring to the success of Marka-e-Haq, Shehbaz Sharif said the world saw Pakistan’s effective use of advanced autonomous systems to protect its physical and cyber frontiers.

He urged universities, research institutions, startups, industries and farmers to work together to build a strong national innovation ecosystem. He said Pakistan must keep locally developed knowledge and technology indigenous, nationally owned and continuously improved.

The prime minister also called for inclusive innovation, saying robotics and autonomous systems should benefit farmers, small businesses, women entrepreneurs, young innovators and underserved communities across the country.

He stressed the need for clear regulatory and ethical frameworks to ensure autonomous systems remain safe, secure and transparent. He also announced the Spark and Elevate Programme to turn research into globally competitive technologies, businesses and jobs.

Shehbaz Sharif further announced the Pakistan Venture Fund with an initial commitment of $20 million to support investment in the country’s technology sector.
