First Google Tango Phone, Lenovo Phab 2 Pro is Coming Next Month [Updated]

Lenovo is bringing the concept of augmented reality out of Google’s Project Tango labs in the hands of its customers with its Phab 2 Pro handset. The phone comes with depth-sensing camera sensors and is said to make “AR and VR as pervasive as your GPS”.

As with Project Tango and other AR technologies, the main detail lies at the back, in the imaging department. The rear boasts three camera sensors, including a 16-megapixel one, a depth-sensing sensor and a wide-angle sensor.

The setup allows the phone to navigate its surroundings, detect objects and then mess with it virtually. This opens up a whole lot of potential in the gaming, navigation, search and other sectors.

The phone also has support for Dolby Atmos 5.1 Surround Sound for a more pleasing audio experience. With the ability to read its surroundings 250,000 times a second, the phone will be able to create a digital layer on top of the physical realm.

The rest of the phone is no slouch by any means either. You get a 6.4” IPS LCD display with impressive QHD resolution. The processor under the hood is a 64-bit Snapdragon 652 with 4 GB worth RAM and 64 GB of storage.

As with technologies like these, the devil is in the detail and Lenovo is trying to cover that as much as possible with by having 25 apps ready for launch. By the year’s end, there will be 100 such apps.

Pricing & Availability

The pricing of the phone is set at $499 (approx. Rs 52,000). You can get your hands on Lenovo and Google’s latest tech starting November this year.

What is Project Tango?

If you aren’t familiar with it, Google’s Project Tango is yet another of the company’s moonshot goals which aims to turn your entire world into a digital playground.

With the special camera sensors, it will allow people to play and develop augmented reality games or see firsthand how their homes look like without buying a particular furniture.

The possibilities for entertainment and practicality are limitless but whether Tango will see arrival in other devices remains to be seen.
