Sales of substandard cooking oil and ghee has been halted in compliance with Supreme Court’s order to ban its distribution till an inquiry is conducted to check product quality. The report is expected to be submitted within ten days.
The order was issued in response to concerns over increasing heart diseases among children, due to consumption of unhealthy cooking oil.
A three-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, resumed the hearing of a suo moto case against the sale of substandard cooking oil in utility stores.
The court also called for quality checks of Tetra Pack plastic pouches and plastic water bottles. According to research, plastic bottles overheat and expire after prolonged exposure to sun and can trigger harmful diseases.
Moreover, the Chief Justice ordered the Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) to investigate the harmful effects of Chinese salt and whether it was responsible for increased heart diseases, blood pressure and other diseases.
Urging attention on the existing ground realities, the Chief Justice brushed aside the report presented by the counsel for Utility stores on cooking oil and ghee.
He concluded the proceedings of the day by issuing derivatives to stop national sales and distribution of substandard cooking oil and adjourned the hearing for two weeks.
