Senate Standing Committee on Science and Technology Thursday unanimously approved COMSATS University Bill, 2017 with a few amendments. The committee directed the Ministry of Science and Technology to submit the report regarding the proposed changes within three days.
The Senate body met here under the chairmanship of Senator Osman Saifullah Khan, and was attended by other members including Muhammad Azam Khan Sawati, Professor Sajid Mir, Lt. Gen (R) Abdul Qayyum, Saleem Mandviwala and Mian Muhammad Ateeq Shaikh.
The committee recommended making two pro-chancellors for the university. One would be the executive director and the second would be the Minister for Science and Technology. The body issued directives for establishing a search committee to recommend the selection of the university’s rector. The committee would prepare rules and report to the Senate committee within one month in this regard.
The Senate committee recommended to include one MNA and one senator in Board of Governing (BoG) of the COMSATS University in order to streamline its functioning. The body also recommended to analyze the physical and mental fitness of senior employees of the university.
Meanwhile, while speaking about the law ministry, Senator Mian Muhammad Ateeq Shaikh said representatives in several bills were not ensured by the ministry, in accordance with rules and regulations laid down by the Senate. The higher officials did not attend the Senate committee meetings, he said, saying changes in the bills were made by the ministry even after the approvals of the concerned committee.
