The population of 10 major cities of the country has increased by 74.4 per cent since 1998, when the last census was conducted, according to the data of recently concluded 6th Population and Housing Census 2017.
The total population of the 10 cities surged to 40,956,232 individuals as per the 2017 census from 23,475,067 registered during the 1998 census, the data revealed.
The figures, based on 6th Census, show that population of Karachi has increased from 9.339 million in 1998 to 14.91 million in the latest Census.
Lahore is the second largest city in terms of population. Its population has increased from 5.143 million in 1998 to 11.126 million in 2017.
Population-wise third largest city of the country is Faisalabad, the count of which has gone up from 2.008 million in 1998 to 3.203 million in 2017.
Population of Rawalpindi City stands at 2.098 million against 1.409 million in the last Census.
The data shows population of Gujranwala at 2.027 million; Peshawar 1.97 million; Multan 1.871 million; Hyderabad 1.732 million; Islamabad Metropolitan Corporation 1.014 million and Quetta 1.001 million.
Meanwhile the Sindh government has rejected the results of the census conducted earlier this year and announced that the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) would call an all-parties conference (APC) on this issue.
In a policy statement issued on Monday, provincial minister Nisar Ahmed Khuhro said the federal government had conspired to reduce Sindh population in the statistics than what it actually was.
“This move is aimed at reducing Sindh’s share in the National Finance Commission as well as in the national and provincial assembly seats and the job quota in federal government services,” Khuhro, the president of the PPP Sindh chapter, added.
He said the PPP government in Sindh would not accept this conspiracy.
According to the results, Sindh’s share in the total population remains unchanged at 23 per cent.
Sindh is the most urbanised province having 52.02 per cent population in urban areas – a result that could disturb rural-urban quotas of the provincial assembly seats and jobs.
Sindh remains the second most populated province with 47.886 million people, which is 23 per cent of the total population.
Sindh’s population has grown by 57.3 per cent or 17.44 million during the past 19 years, but its overall share in the national population remains stagnant.
Sindh’s annual growth rate remained 2.41 per cent – slightly above the national average. Sindh’s urban population has increased to 52 per cent as compared to 48.9 per cent in 1998.
There are 48 per cent or 22.96 million women in Sindh – which is one per cent up when compared with the 1998 results.
Karachi needs some space! Its time to start thinking about migration from Karachi to nearby places or establish new cities nearby Karachi, this way is the only option to develop Karachi as it deserves
Better to break karachi into 6 smaller cities. enough with the big giant crowd of hell.

Well there are some serious doubts on this census results. As per results Faisalabad’s population is only 3 million while rawalpindi’s population is just 2 Million? Are they guys serious?
And now they are telling me that Gujranwala is bigger city than Multan, Hyderabad and Peshawer in Population? Right?
And it doesn’t end here, they are saying that Gujranwala has just 70 thousand less people than Rawalpindi?

And I have got brain to analyse things, and I will continue using it as long as I live. I have seen all big cities of Punjab and I know that Lahore’s population could be double than Faisalabad not more than that and one can easily extract 3 Gujranwala out of Rawalpindi and Multan each and 3 Lahore out of one Karachi.
These results purely based on political grounds to divide federal and provincial resources.

And surprising thing is Lahore’s population grew 116% in last 20 years but Karachi’s population grew only 50%. And Gujranwala’s Population increased 100% but Faisalabad, Multan, Rawalpindi, Hyderabad and Peshawar grew less than Gujranwala. Just because PMLN has strong holds in Lahore and Gujranwala so new constituencies could be established their.
Bhai, They only count for the MAIN CITY and not suburbs like Bahria Town, or other outskirt towns that would be included in the METROPOLITAN AREA!, that’s why Karachi is shown to only 13 million people whereas the metropolitan population would most likely be around 27 million because suburbs and outskirts like Malir, Korangi, Bahria Town, etc. are not counted AND Islamabad Capital Territory is shown to have 2,006,572 people in the census summary and in this list Islamabad is shown to have 1,014,825. So yea….
well being a Lyalpuria (Faisalabadi), I have doubts too on these statistics….I think City area population figures have been manipulated in a manner. also someone was a post on Facebook that the largest population by caste is of Mughals, then Arain and Awan at No. 3…..Where are Jutts and Rajputs……… pindaan dey pind saday Juttaaan dey tey ainha noo nazar e na ayye…….

Sorry for late reply, saw it now. well the thing is when Gen. ZIa ul Haq held elections on non party basis, these (Brothery برادری) things evolved. Now, it is an established fact that votes in majority of ur country (almost all rural population and tribes) are being cast on ethnic, religious (مسلک) and tribal (which is also a kind of caste system) grounds. I or you didn’t start it. That’s the way things started and no one has tried to bring a corrections system. Infact, let me summarize……….(کسی بھی برادری کے بڑوں کے ساتھ جپھی ڈال لو، بدلے میں آپ کو ووٹ تھالی میں رکھ کر مِل جائیں گے سب لوگوں کے) isn’t it so?

They didn’t count places like Bahria Town, Cantonments (Clifton Cantt. is included), etc. or else the population would be much higher. Looks like they only counted the “Main” city like Saddar Town, Lyari, Gulshan Town, Jamshed Town, etc.
We need to build more cities and implement two child policy. But nobody cares. Jahilon ki fauj banti ja rahi ha abaadi.

in 1998 Punjab’s population share was 56% and now it has dropped to 51%. Provinces get NFC distribution on “whole province’s population” base not base on a specific city population. Punjab’s share is going to drop after this census result.
