A report by the State Bank of Pakistan recognized Karachi as the ‘cheapest city in the country’ among five other major cities.
Lahore, on the other hand, earned the title of being the most expensive city of the country when it comes to the living cost.
Varying Inflation Rate
According to the report issued by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) – Inflation Monitor-August 2017 – there was a mixed trend in the CPI inflation rate of the federal and provincial capitals of Pakistan.
However, the report clearly observed that the city with the lowest inflation rate was Karachi with a year-on-year consumer price index inflation (CPI) of 1.7% in August, 2017, as compared to 3.3% a year ago.
The SBP stated,
Among these five cities, the lowest inflation was observed in Karachi at 1.7 percent, while the highest inflation was observed in Lahore at 5.1 percent.
World’s Cheapest City?
In 2015, Karachi was also ranked as the World’s cheapest city in a report featured by BBC. The deceleration in food inflation, coupled with many other factors had the effect of bringing down the cost of living back then.
According to analysts, Karachi, the country’s largest trading and financial hub, with a current food inflation rate of was 0.7%, has seen a reduction in the cost of living. This low cost of living, coupled with other factors has caused a reduction in the inflation rate of the city.
On the other hand, Lahore – the most expensive city of the country – witnessed the highest food inflation rate of 4% and a non-food inflation rate of 6%, compared to Karachi’s non-food inflation rate at 2.5%.
Inflation Rates of other major cities
While Quetta observed a decline in its CPI inflation, Islamabad and Peshawar stood among the cities with the highest inflation rate.
- Inflation rate for Islamabad was 5%.
- Inflation rate was 2.1% in the provincial capital of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
