#WeAreTheChange: One Woman’s Story Forces Authorities to Open A Complaint Center in Hunza

A few months ago, Meenah Tariq, a noted public speaker, had to face one of the most harrowing experiences in her life.

She became the target of harassment by a group of boys while on a vacation at near Khunjrab Pass, Hunza. Her account of the mental agony she was subjected to by a group of ruffians there, went viral over social media, and sparked a conversation about similar issues faced by women all over Pakistan,

Everyone knows her story by now.  And many more also know that sadly nothing is done regarding such characters by the authorities in charge.

All’s Well That Ends Well

Recently, Meenah had something heartening to share regarding the incident she went through in July this year.

Meenah says that her harrowing experience has actually resulted in some meaningful action being taken by the  authorities.

She said that Mr. M Anas Goraya, Assistant Commissioner at Hunza, personally reached out to her regarding the issue she faced at Khunjerab Pass.

First he apologized for what Meenah, her friends and family had to go through there. And then he proceeded to the heart of the matter – harassment of women needs to be shut down once and for all.

Harassment of women is no joke, nor is it a matter that should be brushed under the carpet. Following a public outcry against serial harassers  and Meenah’s appeal, Mr. Goraya has mentioned that the authorities have established a complaint center for such issues. He personally assured Meenah that such issues wont be tolerated and that strict action will be taken against miscreants who spoil the holiday experience for other families and ladies.

Meenah, touched by Mr. Goraya’s gesture and message, took to Facebook and updated her followers:

Meenah’s example shows that one should never be afraid to speak out and illustrates the potential for change social media grants to each of us. The conclusion to her story has brought hope to many people that such cases will be dealt with an iron-hand wherever they happen.

Lets hope that other cities also follow AC Hunza’s lead and bar such people from ruining quality family time for thousands of vacationers countrywide. After all, with the increasing spate of foreign tourists that are coming to Pakistan recently, we need to make a great first impression.

  • Naqab & Parda (Means Hijaab)(According to Islam) More Helpful for All Women :
Q?K Makhi Hamesha Khuli Cheez Par Baith ti Hai :
Any Way Hats Off of Braving Women : Appreciated :.

    • We have to shut down ^ this sort of mentality, first. This becomes the basis of what comes next.

Islam never says if a woman is not wearing Hijab, others are free to harass them. Indeed, Islam condemns it.

And, stop treating a woman like a “Cheez.” Is this how you treat your mother, sister and daughter? You may have your own POV on Naqab & Parda, but don’t try to implement it on others, or at least be a gentleman and condemn something if you see it wrong.

Read the article again: the boys, of course, misbehaved with the lady, and without knowing how the lady was dressed, you assumed it was all about her dress. Really?! Please, get a life.

      • Example Diya hai Itna Serious Mat Ho Jayeh (Larko Ko Makhi Bhi Likha Hai)
Aur Pure Kunjrab Pass Main Wo Isi Khubsurat Tareen Husun Ki Malika Ho Harassment Kiya (Talking about face to face) if even she had a wear of islamic libas no one can follow her.
That’s it : I Appreciated k Us Ne Awaz Uthai But This PAIGHAM Is for All Women :

        • Raied the paigham for all men as well, “lower your gaze”
makhi likhnay se you can’t justify yourself. I agree with M Ameen
not appreciated the way you called her in your post, it just reflects how you treat a woman

    • Aap ki bat sahi hy makhi lekin nakab aur hijab wali maon behnon ko bhi nai chorte ye loag, aik sharam hoti hy jo insan k ander hoti hy, aik gairat hoti hy jo gairat mandon k pass hoti hy, aik tarbiat hoti hy jo family se milti hy, aise logon ko nishane ibrat bana k udher he chittar maar k unki pic media pe dikhai jain ta k bakion k liye bhi sabak ho.

    • naqab aur hijab sirf khaateen keliye hi hai, kya mardon keliye nigaah neechi rakhnay ka hukm nahin, kya hamesha aurat hi qasoorwaar hai, mard ko bura kyun nahin kaha jata, I would like to know your reactions if God forbid your sister or mother had been through such trauma, you would have definitely treated them in a way they desrved

    • people who have this shitty mentality are the reason for such cases. At one point they will be preaching Islam quran and and next moment they forget about all the teachings because larki ne parda nahi kia so we are allowed to harass her.. wow hats off man

  • Such men should be punished badly. Inki maa behan auron ko chairty waqht shaid wajood me nahi hoti but jub inki izat pe baat ae to mar jeena aik ker daity hain..
