Another fascinating game of cricket and yet another loss for Pakistan, this time it was much more than a match which was at stake. Pakistan’s impressive loss-less record at their adopted home, which lasted for 7 years, ended with the defeat in the second match today.
Pakistan could not chase a target of 317 despite brilliant batting from Sarfaraz Ahmed and Asad Shafiq. It was another dismal performance from the Pakistani batsmen, particularly Babar Azam and Shan Masood.
Karunaratne walked away with the ‘Player of the Match’ award following his magnificent batting display in the first innings. He also claimed the ‘Player of the Series’ award due to his brilliant run with the bat in the two-match series, scoring 306 runs at 76.50.
First Innings Recap
Sri Lanka dominated the first innings with Dimuth Karunaratne scoring his career-best 196, before being bowled by Wahab Riaz. Half-centuries from Dickewlla, Perera and captain Chandimal ensured that Sri Lanka gets to a very competitive score of 482.
Yasir Shah became the first spinner in the history of test cricket to take 5 consecutive five-fors with figures of 184-6.
Pakistan started sluggish, with Shan Masood scoring just 16 off 72 balls at a strike rate of 22.22, which helped Sri Lankan bowlers to pressurize the Pakistani batsmen right from the word go.
Fifties from the promising Haris Sohail and the experienced Azhar Ali took the score to 262, meaning that the deficit was 220.
Sri Lanka could have enforced the follow-on but decided not to bat fourth on a turning Dubai pitch.
Second Innings Run-down
A fiery spell from Wahab Riaz and a record 3-wicket over by Haris Sohail meant that Pakistan was set a target of 317.
Pakistani openers were once again negative in their approach miserably failing to score. Pakistan was reduced to 52-5 before the duo of Sarfaraz and Asad Shafiq took the score to 198-5 (Asad Shafiq 86*, Sarfraz Ahmed 57*, 73 overs) at stumps.
The hopes were high at the start of Day 5, Asad reached the hundred-run landmark, but Sarafarz made an early exit, exposing the tail too early in the day. Aamir was removed briskly after the departure of Sarfaraz.
Others could not resist longer, falling for 248, 68 short of the target.

Babar Azam got out just before tea yesterday. Turns out, getting out just before/after breaks is definitely a thing with him. https://t.co/mQINyhn8p5 pic.twitter.com/dQDO0d1av6
