Sony Hopes to Revive its Midrange with the Xperia R1 and R1 Plus

Sony is trying to break into the mid-range market with the new Xperia R1 and Xperia R1 Plus. Sony’s low-end/mid-range presence before this has been rudimentary (Xperia L).

The phones come with entirely similar specifications, expect that the Plus variant comes with twice the storage and 1 GB extra RAM.

Design and Display

The design philosophy is similar to what we have already seen from Sony. The Xperia R1 and R1 Plus feature the same rectangular and blocky design that the series is known for.

The display is a 5.2-inch TFT LCD panel with HD 720p resolution. It comes with moderately sized bezels on either side.

Internals and Storage

Under the hood, you get the mid-range Snapdragon 430 processor we have seen in multiple phones over the past few years.

It is accompanied with 2 GB RAM on the standard model, with the R1 Plus bringing the total to 3 GB. The two models come with 16 and 32 GB RAM, respectively. Storage is expandable nonetheless with a microSD card slot.

For connectivity, you get USB-C to begin with. There are two SIM card slots, FM Radio and all the essentails you’d expect. The fingerprint scanner is notably missing.

Camera(s)

At the back is the single 13 MP sensor with LED Flash. Though nothing worth writing home about, the camera comes with predictive auto focus system, which is more accurate when shooting mobile objects.

The front boasts an 8 MP camera also with the same predictive autofocus tech.

Battery, Pricing and Availability

The battery capacity is set at 2620 mAh. Pricing for the regular version starts at $215, while the Plus variant ups it to $245. The two phones are only available in India for now with no word on an international release.
