PTA Starts Formulating Framework for Testing of 5G in Pakistan

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is in the process of formulating a framework for testing and development of new technologies; identification of spectrum bands for 5G; and constitution of a multilateral stakeholder working group.

This has been revealed in PTA official documents available with ProPakistani.

According to the documents, Next Generation Mobile Services (3G/4G) have gained momentum in Pakistan through consistent policy initiatives adopted over the past four years ensuring availability of requisite frequency spectrum supply to the mobile broadband market.

To stay at the forefront of technology and to enable State of the art service for Pakistani consumers, Telecom Policy 2015 provides measures not only for early commercial adoption of technology but also to provide conducive testing and development environment for upcoming and future technologies. It is, therefore, imperative that we remain proactive in ensuring market readiness for the next wave of mobile communications i.e. 5G.

5G is expected to enable new ground breaking data rates and limits and will considerably enhance the experience of services/applications that are available today.

In view of this and to enable Pakistan to keep up with the growth in the field and embrace new technologies, it is imperative to formalize the regulatory environment through policy for testing, deployment and benchmarking of 5G technologies.

Thus, the Federal Government has issued Policy Directives for compliance of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority. In this regard, PTA is in process of formulating a Framework for testing and development of new technologies; identification of spectrum bands for 5G; and constitution of a multilateral stakeholder working group.
