President Mamnoon Hussain has inaugurated digital edition of Urdu dictionary in Islamabad today.
The 22-volume dictionary, containing 264,000 words, will now be accessible worldwide online.
Speaking on the occasion, the President said that launching this dictionary has brought the Urdu language forward amongst the ranks of global languages with full grandeur.
He said the dictionary is also reflective of our one thousand years of cultural traditions and such initiatives will help protect us against foreign cultural invasion.
The President expressed confidence that Urdu Dictionary Board will continue research to update the dictionary regularly.
He desired that voice capabilities should be added to the dictionary to help people understand pronunciation of words.
Prime Minister’s Advisor on National History and Cultural Heritage, Irfan Siddiqui, said the project has been completed in two years at a cost of 13.2 million rupees and work has been initiated for a version with multimedia capabilities.
He said an abridged version of the dictionary is being prepared for children while work is in being done to prepare Lughat-e-Iqbal and Lughat-e-Ghalib, containing uncommon words used by the famous poets in their poetry.
Irfan Siddiqui said offices of Academy of Letters would be set up in Dadu, Muzaffarabad, Gilgit, FATA and Multan. He said that the National Book Foundation sold books worth 350 million rupees last year.

Must be a sh*t dictionary on a sh*tty site which will be hacked in future like any other govt owned sites due to no maintenance and upgrade. Privately owned sites are doing a much better job and providing the Urdu dictionary for free for past several years.
aap to ghussa hi kar gaye hain….
While sites maintained by Information Technology Boards of Punjab and KP are doing quite well.
The official site of PTI was hacked just few days ago. So much for the KP doing quite well.
