Dr. Asim Hussain Reappointed as Sindh HEC Chairman

The provincial government re-appointed Dr. Asim Hussain, the ex-Federal Minister and a leader of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), as the Chairman of the Sindh Higher Education Commission (HEC).

A notification for the same was issued by the Sindh chief secretary on Sunday.

The notification reads:

In continuation of this department’s notification of even number dated 28.1.2014 & in exercise of the powers conferred under Section 5 (1) of the Sindh Higher Education Commission Act-2013, the Chief Minister Sindh/ Controlling Authority has been pleased to re-appoint Dr. Asim as Chairperson, Sindh Higher Education Commission for one more similar term.

Although he has been re-appointed as the chairman of HEC, he also continues to enjoy the role of a provincial minister. It should be mentioned that this was the very same role for which he was arrested and taken into custody by Sindh Rangers back in August 2015.

Dr. Asim Hussain, who is considered as a close aide of the former President and co-chairman of PPP Asif Ali Zardari, was charged several times for indulging in financial crimes. This also includes corruption references filed by NAB against him to the tune of Rs 479 billion.

An earlier probe into his crimes also found that Dr. Asim had been providing treatments as well as protection to terrorists at a hospital under his ownership.

The academic association claims that the Dr. Asim did not perform his duties as was expected of him as as the Chairman of Sindh Higher Education Commission.
