KPK Police was after the ex-councilor of KPK’s ruling party, PTI. However, Imran Khan has commended the role of the Provincial Police in arresting the key suspect. District Police Officer (DPO) Mardan, Dr. Mian Saeed told the media about the arrest:

Initial investigation shows he recently returned from abroad.

Mashal Khan, a student of the Mardan’s Abdul Wali Khan University was ruthlessly murdered after being humiliated in front of the whole university, on 13 April 2017. The angry mob blamed Khan for posting blasphemous content on a social media website, which was later found out to be false.

The anti-terrorism court in Abbottabad had previously issued a death sentence to one of the 57 arrested. AFive of the mobsters received a 25-year-prison. However, 26 out of the 57 were released over insufficient evidence.

KPK Government, however, decided to challenge the court’s order of the 26 who managed to get released due to lack of evidence as it is confident that the arrests made by the Police were legitimate. In a recent press release issued by the K-P Home Department, the government claimed that an appeal will be filed for the extreme punishment of those already awarded (life imprisonment).
