Android P is nearing its final stable build and is expected to get an official launch for most devices – other than beta users – in the coming days.
It just received a new update – the Beta 3 – which is one step closer to a consumer-ready stable release. Google has been polishing it up for quite some time now, and the new version comes with internal patchwork to improve its stability.
One Step Closer
It’s a slow process, as it still requires a lot of testing before the company can launch it worldwide for a wide range of devices. Google’s VP of engineering, David Burke wrote,
Today we’re rolling out Beta 3 of Android P, our next milestone in this year’s Android P developer preview. With the developer APIs already finalized in the previous update, Beta 3 now takes us very close to what you’ll see in the final version of Android P, due later this summer.
There aren’t many major visual changes in the new Beta 3, it includes the latest security updates, bug fixes, and a number of stability optimization measures. The new beta is available for testing if you have a Pixel device, and can enroll your handset here. If your device is already running the Beta 2, it should soon get automatically updated to the latest build.
So What’s New in Beta 3?
Beta 3 comes with the latest build tools for developers to test out their apps before the stable release of Android P is launched. Alongside the operating system itself, the Android Emulator and Android Studio are also getting updated with independent D8 support.
As the VP said, the new Android API (level 28) has “near-final system behaviors” and is a good reflection of how Android P will look like in the future.

Specifically for developers, Beta 3 lets you add Android P features to your applications and you can now test out features such as multi-camera support, ImageDecoder, TextClassifier, display cutout (for notched phones), enhanced notifications, and others.
Android P’s stable version is expected to launch somewhere near August or September this year, and it will receive more polishing before Google fully converts it to a final build. As we mentioned earlier, you will automatically get updated to the latest Beta 3 if you have already enrolled yourself in the beta program.
