Karachi Municipal Misinterprets Notice and Issues Tsunami Warning

A misinterpretation of the Met Office’s press release, which called for Indian Ocean-wide Tsunami drills as a part of the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System routine maintenance – has led to panic and fear among the masses in Karachi.

Pakistan Meteorology Department (PMD) invited a number of officials from Karachi Nuclear Power Complex, Karachi Port Trust, Pakistan Air Force, Pakistan Navy, Provincial Disaster Management Authority Karachi, National Disaster Management Authority and Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners of different areas for safety preparedness and coordination between the authorities in the event of a Tsunami. Media was also invited in the joint press release by National Seismic Monitoring Centre and PMD.

Following the invite, the District Municipal Corporation (DMC) East issued a circular informing the citizens about the likelihood of a tsunami and heavy rainfall in parts of Sindh and Karachi. The circular looked like this:

The statement sparked fear among the residents however, the wrong statement was brushed aside by PMD authorities terming it false and that tsunami in Karachi is unlikely.

PMD Director Abdul Rashid cleared the air, telling the people not to panic.

We just wrote to different departments for their participation in the tsunami drills, and it was nothing else.

A senior official at DMC East termed the mistake as a ‘typo’. Such false reports question the credibility of the organizations like DMC and the issue was also raised over the mainstream and social media.
