Xiaomi Announces List of Phones Getting Android 9.0 Update

Xiaomi has announced a list of phones that will get an update to Android 9.0 Pie along with a timeline for each phone.

As you’d expect, the new software bundle is being reserved for the company’s latest smartphones, as Android 9.0 Pie might face problems running on older hardware.

The list also shows which phones will get an update to Android Oreo and also when the updates will roll out.

The list says that phones, including Mi 5, Mi 5s, Mi 5s Plus, Mi 6, Mi 8, Mi 8 SE, Mi 8 Lite, Mi 8 Explorer Edition, Mi 8 Pro, Mi MIX, Mi MIX 2, Mi Note 2, and Mi Note 3 are already running Android 8.0 Oreo.

However, an Android Oreo beta program for Redmi 5, Redmi 5A, Redmi 5 Plus, and Redmi 5X will begin somewhere at the end of this year, during the fourth quarter.

That’s odd, and we can’t say what it means exactly, because these phones already have Android Oreo. This could be an update to a newer MIUI version, or perhaps some recent security patches, that are yet to get a stable release for Redmi 5, Redmi 5A, Redmi 5 Plus, and Redmi 5X.

The list didn’t mention some phones like the Redmi 6X (Mi A2 globally), however.

Android Pie Phones

Further down the table, the list goes on about recent Xiaomi phones,  showing Android update statuses of the Mi Mix 2S, Mi 8, Mi 8 Explorer Edition, Mi 8 Pro, Mi 8 SE, and finally Mi Max 3.

As per the list, Mi Mix 2S, Mi 8, and Mi 8 Explorer Edition already have Android 9.0 Pie, with stable versions already released. Mi 8 Pro, Mi 8 SE, and Mi Max 3 will be enrolled in the Android Pie beta program at the end of this year, similarly in the fourth quarter.

Xiaomi takes time to send updates to its low-end phones, but is known to unroll the latest MIUI versions to much older smartphones as well. Some models might not get stable Android Pie or Android Oreo, but they’ll at least get the latest MIUI versions, which is nice.
